Old Photographs Fauldhouse Scotland
Old photograph of Fauldhouse in West Lothian, Scotland. Fauldhouse was known until the 19th century by the names Falas or latterly Fallas. There are families with the surname Fallas, who obviously had ancestors who came from Fauldhouse. The name Fallas or Fauldhouse has been translated as house on the fold or house in the field.
Fala, is of Scottish territorial origin from the lands of Fala in Midlothian. The name is believed to derive from the Medieval English " Falwe ", meaning " Fallow " i.e. a piece of ploughed ground left uncropped for a year or more. The surname was first recorded in the latter part of the 12th Century. One, Bartholomew de Faulaw was witness to a charter in favour of the House of Soltre between the years 1214 and 1240. One, George de Falow was Provost of Edinburgh in 1421. The variant spellings Fallawe, Fawlo, Faulo and Falowe appear on record in Scotland during the period 1426 to 1453. James Fala was a tenant under the Abbey of Kelso in 1576. On June 24th, 1723 William Falla and Janet Veitch were married in Edinburgh, Midlothian. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Radulf Falache, charter witness, which was dated circa 1165 in The Register of Paisley Monastery, during the reign of King William.

Old Photograph Tor Castle Scotland
Old photograph of Tor Castle near Elgin, Scotland. A seat of the Comyns or Cummings of Altyre. It was built in the 15th and extended periodically until the 17th century.
The Scottish surname Cummings is probably Norman-Breton in origin. It was introduced initially into England, by the followers of William the Conqueror at or after the battle of Hastings in 1066. The derivation is from either a pre 7th century personal name, originally, Cumine, or Comyn, and thought to derive from the Breton, Celtic element, can, meaning, bent, crooked, and a common element in such surnames as Campbell and Cameron, or from the French town of Comines. In Scotland, the family founded by William Comyn, grew to be one of the most powerful in the country. In so doing they held at one time the Earldoms of both Angus and Atholl, Perthshire.

Old Photograph The Quakers Perth Perthshire Scotland
Old photograph of The Quakers in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. The story of Quakerism can be divided into four main periods: its rise during the few years of the rule of Oliver Cromwell in England; the epic period during the latter Stuart dynasty, during which it reached a height and simultaneously underwent its cruellest persecutions in Aberdeen; its gradual decline with occasional surges of social activity; and its dwindling activities in the nineteenth century. The pioneer Quakers were nothing if not strong in zeal to win converts, and the Movement had hardly obtained a footing in England before the dark carnal people of Scotland were marked down for missionary enterprise.

Tour Scotland Photographs The Emigrant Statue Helmsdale Sutherland
Tour Scotland photograph of The Emigrant Statue at Helmsdale in Sutherland, Scotland. This statue was unveiled by The Alex Salmond MSP, First Minister of Scotland with the following words, " Today's unveiling of this remarkable new presence in the Highland environment marks an important moment for Scotland. The impulse to create this statue came from a desire to remember, but also to reconcile; to reflect on the past, but to draw on it for the future's strength. The clearances that took place across Scotland in the eighteenth century were most acutely felt here in the Highlands, and rarely with such severity as in the communities like those around Kildonan. There is sadness of course in the recollection that this strath once played home to hundreds of families in dozens of small communities - a way of life that was transformed forever by the economic experiments of that period. But we should take heart, and pride too, from the resilience of those that left this country and made their contribution, often a significant one, to the communities of other countries that showed generosity in receiving them. Modern Scotland must learn from our history. Yes, we will continue to give our ideas and innovation and energy to the world, but we will recognise too that our people are our country's greatest resource and they must always be treated as such."

Old Photographs Dreghorn Scotland
Old photograph of Dreghorn village near Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland. This parish comprehends the old parishes of Dreghorn and Pearston, which were united in 1668. The whole of the parish was historically the property of the De Morvilles, who were Constables of Scotland and Lords of Cunninghame. John Boyd Dunlop was born at a Dreghorn farm on 5 February 1840. He qualified as a veterinary surgeon at the Dick Vet in Edinburgh and set up practice in Belfast, where he invented a pneumatic tyres for bicycles in October 1887. The principle had been patented by Robert William Thomson in 1847, but it was Dunlop's invention that made a success of the idea. The Church of Scotland parish church dates from from 1780, and has an unusual octagonal plan. At one time, the church was known locally as the Threepenny after the 12 sided Threepence coin. Dreghorn's historical main industries were farming and coal mining. All of the coal mines around Dreghorn were closed by the early 1980s. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

Tigh a Garadh Beag is a beautifully maintained bungalow originally built as a retreat for an artist and his family. It is thoughtfully designed and tastefully decorated with his and other artists' work. The large picture window in the lounge has an inspiring outlook to the sea and coastal hillside. There is a pretty garden where visitors can sit out and enjoy the peaceful scenic surroundings. The house is situated on the edge of the village, offering seclusion, but the shop, restaurants, tea room and hotel bar are less than 5 minutes walk away. The restful tranquillity of the west coast is exemplified in the remote Highland village of Drumbeg.

Tour Scotland Video Photograph Blue Poppy Branklyn Garden Perth Perthshire
Tour Scotland video of a Blue Poppy on visit to Branklyn Garden in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Meconopsis grandis, nicknamed the Blue Poppy, although it is only poppy-like, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Papaveraceae. It was first described by French botanist Viguier in 1814. These plants are commonly found in the Himalayas. This is one of my favourite Scottish gardens with a wonderful collection of rhododendrons, alpines, and herbaceous. A must visit if you are in Perth.

Tour Scotland travel video of the Hope memorial stained glass window on visit to Old St Leonards Church on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit and trip to Perth, Perthshire<. To the glory of God and in memory of his father and mother, erected by Robert Hope, Huntingtower. " He leadeth me beside still water "
Hope is a name derived from the Middle English hope, ultimately from the Old English word hopian referring to a positive expectation or to the theological virtue of hope. It was used as a virtue name by the Puritans. Puritans also used Hope as an element in phrase names, such as Hope for, Hopeful, and Hope still. The name is also the usual English translation of the Greek name of Saint Hope, an early Christian child martyr who was tortured to death along with her sisters Faith and Charity. Hope has been among the top 1,000 names given to girls born in the United States since 1880 and has been among the top 500 since 1909.

As a man's name this surname is from the Old French " beu, bel " meaning " handsome ", which was also used as a nickname. As a female name it represents a short form of Isobel, a form of Elizabeth. Finally, it may be an Anglicized form of the Gaelic " MacGiolla Mhaoil ", " son of the servant of the devotee ". The surname dates back to the mid 12th Century. Early recordings include one Robert de la Belle in 1222 in London, England. Church recordings show the christening of Mary Bell, an infant, on August 13th 1541, at St. Peter's, Cornhill, London, and the marriage of Margarett Bell to Wylliam Traford on September 13th September 1551, at St. Mary's, Westminster, also in London. One Charles Bell, aged 23 yrs., a famine emigrant, sailed from Liverpool aboard the " Henry Clay ", bound for New York, America, on April 15th 1846.
