In 563 St Columba travelled to Scotland with twelve companions, where according to legend he first landed on the Kintyre Peninsula, near Southend. In 563 he was granted land on the island of Iona, off the west coast of Scotland, which became the centre of his evangelising mission to the Picts.

Saint Margaret of Scotland, born 1045, died 16th November 1093, also known as Margaret of Wessex and Queen Margaret of Scotland, was an English princess of the House of Wessex. Born in exile in Hungary, she was the sister of Edgar Ætheling, the short ruling and uncrowned Anglo-Saxon King of England. Margaret and her family returned to England in 1057, but fled to the Kingdom of Scotland following the Norman conquest of England of 1066. Around 1070 Margaret married Malcolm III of Scotland, becoming his queen consort. She was a pious woman, and among many charitable works she established a ferry across the Firth of Forth for pilgrims travelling to Dunfermline Abbey, which gave the towns of South Queensferry and North Queensferry their names.

Tour Scotland Video MacPherson Stained Glass Window Glencoe

Tour Scotland travel video of the Robert MacPherson memorial stained glass window in St Mary's Episcopal Church on history visit and trip to Glencoe, Highland. " To the glory of God and to the affectionate memory of Robert MacPherson, priest, first incumbent of St. Mary's Church, Glencoe. Born on the 12th of May 1854. Died on 19th of December 1888. This window was erected by the congregation and friends " Chriochnaich mi an obair a thug thu dhomh i a dheanamh. Gaelic words which mean, " I finished the work that you gave me to do "

In Scottish Gaelic the name Macpherson is Mac a' Phersein which means son of the parson. The Celtic church allowed priests to marry and the progenitor of the chiefs of Clan Macpherson is believed to have been a man named Muireach or Murdo Cattenach who was the priest of Kingussie in Badenoch. The Clan Macpherson is part of the Clan Chattan Confederation. In 843 the chief of Clan Chattan was Gille Chattan Mor and one of his sons, the first chief of Clan Macpherson was forced to resettle in Lochaber by Kenneth MacAlpin, first king of Scots. The chief could have been the lay prior of Ardchattan and he seems to have been named in honor of Saint Cathan. Macpherson clan traditions is that in 1309 Robert the Bruce offered the lands of Badenoch to the chief of Clan Macpherson on the condition that they destroyed the Bruce's enemies, the Clan Comyn, and the Macphersons carried out the king's wishes. The Clan Macpherson is sometimes known as the Clan of the Three Brothers owing to the fact that chief Ewan Ban Macpherson had three sons: Kenneth Macpherson of Clunie, Iain Macpherson of Pitman and Gillies Macpherson of Invereshie.

Old Photograph Crofters Cottages Isle Of Harris Scotland

Old photograph of a Crofters cottage on Island Of Harris, Scotland. The southern part of Harris is less mountainous, with numerous unspoilt, white sandy beaches on the west coast. The beaches of Luskentyre and Scarista are amongst the most spectacular. There had already been a mass emigration from the islands in the 1770s, after a series of years of poor crops, and this intensified as crofters used their capital to pay their fare across the Atlantic, from Lewis to mainland Nova Scotia, from North Uist and Harris to Cape Breton, Canada, and from South Uist to Cape Breton and to Prince Edward Island

The Lade Braes name derives from hillside, known as braes in Scots, and a course of water, lade, denoting the course built to divert the water from the Kinness Burn to the many mills that once existed in the area. The Law Mill initially drew water from the Lumbo Burn before 1843 and after this date the diverted waters of the Kiness Burn were also used.
