Old photograph of a Crofter with a Peat basket on Island Of Harris, Scotland. Peat in Scotland has a long and complex history, deeply intertwined with the landscape, culture, and economy. Formed over millennia from the accumulation of partially decomposed plant matter in waterlogged conditions, peatlands cover nearly a quarter of Scotland's land area.
