Tour Scotland Photographs Church of the Holy Rude Stirling

Tour Scotland photograph of the Church of the Holy Rude, Stirling, Scotland. The Church of the Holy Rude is the second oldest building in Stirling, after Stirling Castle. The church was founded in 1129 during the reign of David I, 1124 to 1153, as the parish church of Stirling. Nothing of the original structure now remains due to a fire. Construction on the new nave was underway by 1414, and based on the heraldry the vault of the nave was completed between 1440 and 1480. Work on the chancel did not commence until 1507 and completed around 1530 which was when the west tower was also extended to its current height. King James VI was crowned King of Scots on 29 July 1567; John Knox performed the ceremony. This makes the Church of the Holy Rude and Westminster Abbey the only churches in Britain still in use to this day that have been the sites of coronations.

Its ecclesiastical significance dates as far back as the fourth century, when St Regulus is claimed to have brought the relics of the saint there; its cultural importance dates from the early fifteenth century, when the world famous university was founded there. More recently, since the seventeenth century, it has been well known as a centre for golf. Skye. The Island and Its Legends. This is a fabulous treasury of legend and wonder; tales of monsters who dwell in lakes, of small people who trap humans in earthen mounds where time stands still; of dark, shape shifting spirits whose cloak of human form is betrayed by the sand and shells which fall from their hair. In the absence of a written tradition, for generations of Skianachs, these tales, handed down orally, contained the very warp and weft of Hebridean history. They take us far beyond Christian times, to the edge of the Iron Age, and interweave with threads from the wider Atlantic tradition of Gaelic heroic myth and legend. Tour Scotland Old Mauchline Ayrshire

Tour Scotland old view of Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland. Robert Burns, Scotland's National Poet came to live on the outskirts of this village at Mossgiel farm in 1784. Many of his poems are believed to have been written whilst he was there, notably The Holy Fair, To a Mouse, and Holy Willie's Prayer. Many of his poems were directed towards the perceived hypocrisy of the Church. The Church was particularly fanatical in Mauchline, which conflicted with the liberal attitude of Burns and his friends. Nonetheless Burns made many friends (his wife Jean Armour was born in Mauchline) and a lot of enemies whilst in Mauchline, many of whom are buried in the kirkyard: "Holy Wullie" Willie Fisher, the Reverend William "Daddy" Auld, John Richmond, "Clockie" Brown and notably Gavin Hamilton his best friend.

Tour Scotland Photograph Bonnie Prince Charlie Cairn

Tour Scotland photograph of the Bonnie Prince Charlie Cairn, Lochaber, Scotland. The Prince's Cairn is a cairn at Loch nan Uamh in Lochaber, Scotland. On 19th September 1746, Charles Edward Stuart arrived from "Cluny's Cage", a refuge on Ben Alder, accompanied by Donald Cameron of Lochiel, John Roy Stewart, and others. There they found L'Heureux, the French frigate that was to carry him to safety. All that day, the 19th, they embarked the refugees that were to accompany the Prince into exile, and on the 20th they sailed away from Scotland. The Prince never saw Scotland again. Loch nan Uamh is also the place where the Prince first set foot on mainland Great Britain on 25 July 1745 and the place from where Charles escaped to the Hebrides after the Battle of Culloden.

Tour Scotland Photograph Video Urqhart Castle From Loch Ness

Tour Scotland photograph of Urquhart Castle by Loch Ness, Scotland. Urquhart Castle is surely one of the most picturesquely situated castles in the Scottish Highlands. The present ruins date from the 13th to the 16th centuries, though built on the site of an early medieval fortification. Founded in the 13th century, Urquhart played a role in the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century. It was subsequently held as a royal castle, and was raided on several occasions by the MacDonald Earls of Ross. The castle was granted to the Clan Grant in 1509, though conflict with the MacDonalds continued. Despite a series of further raids the castle was strengthened, only to be largely abandoned by the middle of the 17th century. Urquhart was partially destroyed in 1692 to prevent its use by Jacobite forces

Tour Scotland Photograph Sunset January 26th

Tour Scotland photograph of sunset, shot at at 4pm in Scone, Perthshire, Scotland. Not a great sunset photo this evening, as you can see in the foreground there is still some snow in this local park, and colder weather on the way in the next few days.

Tour Scotland Photograph Robert Burns Seat Birks of Aberfeldy

Tour Scotland photograph of Robert Burns seat at the Birks of Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland. Robert Burns wrote the song, " The Birks Of Aberfeldy " in late August 1787, during a visit to the Birks of Aberfeldy, then known as the Den of Moness. Legend has it that Burns wrote the song after resting in a natural seat on the rock, just at the side of the Birks. This natural seat is well known and a plaque now exists at the exact spot where Burns was inspired to write the ballad.

Now simmer blinks on flow'ry braes,
And o'er the crystal streamlet plays,
Come, let us spend the lightsome days
In the birks of Aberfeldie!

(Chorus)
Bonnie lassie, will ye go,
will ye go, will ye go,
Bonnie lassie, will ye go
To the birks of Aberfeldie?

The little birdies blithely sing,
While o'er their heads the hazels hing;
Or lightly flit on wanton wing
In the birks of Aberfeldie!

The braes ascend like lofty wa's,
The foaming stream, deep-roaring, fa's,
O'er-hung wi'fragrant spreading shaws,
The birks of Aberfeldie.

The hoary cliffs are crown'd wi'flowers,
White o'er the linns the burnie pours,
And, rising, weets wi' misty showers
The birks of Aberfeldie.

Let Fortune's gifts at random flee,
They ne'er shall draw a wish frae me,
Supremely blest wi' love and thee
In the birks of Aberfeldie.
