The Robertson surname is spelt variously as Robertson, Roberts, Robarts and Robeson, and amongst the early records is one which shows that Thomas Robertson, a merchant Scot, had a safe conduct to travel to England in 1444, although legend has it, that the patronymic Robertson was adopted by a Scottish family, after King Robert the Bruce of Scotland in circa 1306, said that he regarded them as his children. Nicholas Robertson, aged 30, was an early emigrant to America. He embarked from London on the ship " Blessing " bound for New England in June 1635. Alexander Robertson, born 1670, died 1749, thirteenth Baron of Struan, became chief of the clan Robertson in 1688.

Tour Scotland Video Druids Park Standing Stone Circle Murthly Perthshire
Tour Scotland video of Druids Park Standing Stone Circle on ancestry visit to Murthly, Perthshire, Scotland. Prior to the laying out of the asylum at Murthly between 1863 and 1864, this stone circle stood out prominently in an open field but it is now surrounded by trees and plants. It is probable that the circle originally comprised 8 stones, of which 5 remain ranging from three to eight feet in height. In 1863 some cinerary urns were found within a few yards of the circle, some in groups of 2 and 3 and one series arranged in a circle. One example however, was buried alone, and contained partly burnt human bones, possibly of a child, together with a perforated bone object, probably a button or play thing.

Tour Scotland Photograph St Vigeans Graveyard Arbroath Angus
Tour Scotland travel video of photography of St Vigeans graveyard and cemetery on ancestry, genealogy, history visit and trip to Arbroath, Angus, Scotland. St Vigeans Church, built of the local red sandstone, served as parish church to the inhabitants of Arbroath up to the Reformation. The 18th century headstones in the kirkyard, some of which are notably well carved, are interesting examples of folk-art, characteristic of Angus. There was once a legend that the kirk was built with stones used by an enslaved Kelpie, and for several years the local congregation would not enter the kirk during certain services for fear the building would collapse due to the Kelpie's curse.

Tour Scotland Video MacDuff's Castle East Wemyss Fife
Tour Scotland video of MacDuff's Castle on ancestry visit to East Wemyss, Fife, Scotland. The location of this Scottish castle is associated with the MacDuff Earls of Fife, the most powerful family in Fife in the middle ages, although nothing survives from this period. The present ruins are the remains of the home of the Wemyss family, who lived here from the 14th century, and their successors in the 16th century. It is thought that a castle may have been built here by the MacDuff Mormaers, or Earls, of Fife in the 11th century, at the time of King Macbeth of Scotland. The castle is supposedly haunted by a Grey Lady, said to be a Mary Sibbald who was found guilty of theft and died in the castle.

Tour Scotland Video David Rattray Flax Spinner Gravestone Rattray Perthshire
Tour Scotland video of the David Rattray, Flax Spinner, gravestone on ancestry visit to the Parish Church graveyard in Rattray by Blairgowrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Erected by Helen Jamieson in memory of her husband, Flax Spinner, Bramble Bank, who died 23rd November, 1850, aged 58 years. Also of their five children who died in infancy. Also in memory of the above Jamieson who died 29th April, 1856, aged 59 years.
The surname Rattray is taken from the barony of Rattray in Perthshire. This barony has been in their possession since the eleventh century. The Rattray estate includes the ruins of a pictish fort dwelling. It stands on a sandy mound which is associated by local tradition with Pagan rites. The first recorded Laird of Rattray was Alan who witnessed charters by William the Lion and Alexander II of Scotland. During the Wars of Scottish Independence, Alan's grandson, Eustace Rattray, was captured at the Battle of Dunbar in 1296 and taken to England as a prisoner. Eustace's son was Adam Rattray who swore fealty to King Edward I of England, appearing on the Ragman Rolls of 1296. Adam was succeeded by his son, Alexander Rattray, who was amongst the barons who sat in the Parliament at Ayr to determine the succession to the throne in 1315. Alexander was succeeded by his brother, Eustace, the sixth Laird of Rattray, who was accused of being involved in a plot to depose Robert the Bruce, but he was latter acquitted.
