Old Photograph Peel House Scotland

Old photograph of Peel House, Galashiels, Scottish Borders of Scotland. Lord Craigmyle handed over Peel House and its grounds on trust to be used as a hospital for service patients. Peel Hospital was built as an emergency medical service hospital and after the war, in 1948 when the NHS came into being, the hospital was used for a while for the the treatment of civilian patients. During the First World War, Lord Craigmyle served in the Royal Marine Artillery and was involved in the Battle of the Somme, he too had experienced the horrors and conditions of deadly warfare where around 450,000 British and Allied soldiers were killed. Thousands more were badly wounded or blinded, and many more suffered from mustard gas and shell shock.
