Old photograph of Abbey St Bathans, Berwickshire, Scotland. Abbey St Bathans was originally a priory of Cistercian Nuns. It was sanctified and then used as a retreat by the sisters who formed the community at Haddington and at Nunraw, under the patronage of Ada, Countess of Dunbar and her husband Patrick, Earl of Dunbar. Ada was an illegitimate daughter of William the Lion, King of Scots, and an unknown mistress. The date of her birth is unknown. In 1184 she married Patrick Dunbar, 5th earl of Dunbar and justiciary of Lothian. There were at least four children from this marriage, Ada, died in 1200, Her husband remarried, before 1208, Christian Fitz Walter, the widow of William de Brus.
