Old Photograph Dunbar Hospital Inverness Scotland

Old photograph of Dunbar Hospital in Inverness, Scotland. This Scottish hospital was built in 1668 and was given to the Burgh by Provost Alexander Dunbar. It was used first as a hospital and then as a school. At various times it has housed the fire engines, the Female School and the Female Work Society. During the cholera epidemic in 1849 it was again used as a hospital. Blog post of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

Old Photograph High Street Penicuik Scotland

Old photograph of cars, shops and houses on the High Street in Penicuik, Scotland. Penicuik is situated on the west bank of the River North Esk. It lies on the A701 road midway between Edinburgh and Peebles, east of the Pentland Hills. Cargill Gilston Knott, was born on 30 June 1856 in Penicuik. He was a Scottish physicist and mathematician who was a pioneer in seismological research. He spent his early career in Japan. He later became a Fellow of the Royal Society, Secretary of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and President of the Scottish Meteorological Society. He died at his home at 42 Upper Gray Street, Newington, Edinburgh, on 26 October 1922.

Old Photograph High Street Cockenzie Scotland

Old photograph of shops, cars and houses on the High Street in Cockenzie, Scotland. This Scottish town is on the coast of the Firth of Forth, four miles north east of Musselburgh. The burgh of Cockenzie was created in 1591 by King James VI of Scotland. Port Seton harbour was built by George Seton, 11th Lord Seton between 1655 and 1665.
