Old Photograph Corse House Lumphannan Scotland
Old photograph of Corse House in the Parish of Lumphannan near Banchory, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This early 19th century mansion house was built by Archibald Simpson. The symmetrical piend roofed wings and the ashlar fronted tripartite bays framing the wooden pedimented doorpiece on the ground floor lend an air of sophistication to this compact mansion. When the previous house was sacked by brigands in the early 16th century William Forbes of Corse vowed, " if God spares my life I shall build a house at which thieves shall knock ere they enter ". The result is a typical example of a Z plan house which was the stock design for the minor nobility of the 16th century. Both comfortable and also safe although in the case of Corse Castle, not sufficient to stop Highlanders semi sacking the place in 1638 and the lairds cousine being carried off for ransom. By the 19th century the castle was abandoned for the nearby Corse House.
