Old Photograph Lighthouse Bass Rock Scotland

A lighthouse was constructed on the rock in 1902, and the remains of a chapel are located there. Old Photograph Lighthouse Turnberry Scotland

Old photograph of the lighthouse at Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland. Turnberry Lighthouse marks a dangerous part of the Ayrshire coast, off which lies Bristo Rock which was responsible for many wrecks. No one was more aware of the toll than the Receiver of Wreck, Ayr and it was he who in 1869 suggested to the Board of Trade that a light should be erected on Bristo Rock. The matter was referred to the Commissioners, whose Engineers David and Thomas Stevenson examined the rock and reported on 18 May 1869 that it was inadvisable to erect a lighthouse on the rock itself but suggested that the best place would be on Turnberry Point, where it now stands.

Old Photograph Policeman Gorbals Scotland

Old photograph of a Policeman in the Gorbals, Glasgow, Scotland. This is an area on the south bank of the River Clyde in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. By the late 19th century it had become over-populated and adversely affected by local industrialisation. Many people lived here because their jobs provided their homes and they could not afford their own. It became widely known as a dangerous slum associated with the problems of drunkenness and crime. It was subject to efforts at redevelopment, which contributed to more problems such as homelessness and the spread of disease. In recent decades, much of the area has been demolished and redeveloped with a mixture of market and social housing. Some buildings are being refurbished and restored to a higher standard.

Old Photograph Rush Hour Isle Of Arran Scotland

Old photograph of rush hour on the Island of Arran, Scotland. Arran has been continuously inhabited since the early Neolithic period. Numerous prehistoric remains have been found. From the 6th century onwards, Goidelic speaking peoples from Ireland colonised it and it became a centre of religious activity. In the troubled Viking Age, Arran became the property of the Norwegian crown, until formally absorbed by the kingdom of Scotland in the 13th century. The 19th-century "clearances" led to significant depopulation and the end of the Gaelic language and way of life. The economy and population have recovered in recent years, the main industry being tourism.

Tour Scotland Video Border Ballad St John's Kirk Perth Perthshire

Tour Scotland video of a young man singing a Border Ballad in St John's Kirk in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. The Anglo-Scottish border has a long tradition of balladry, such that a whole group of songs exists that are often called " border ballads ", because they were collected in that region. Border ballads, like all traditional ballads, were traditionally sung unaccompanied. There may be a repeating motif, but there is no "chorus" as in most popular songs. The supernatural is a common theme in Border ballads, as are recountings of raids and battles.

Little is known of the history of the peoples of the Hebrides before the 6th century as they, like the rest of Scotland, were in the depths of what centuries later became known as the Dark Ages. The first written records of the islands come with the arrival of St. Columba in the 6th century. It was this Irish Scottish saint who first brought Christianity to the islands, founding several churches.

Old Photograph Sir Alexander Fleming Scotland

Old photograph of Sir Alexander Fleming who was born on the 6th of August, 1881 at Lochfield, a farm near Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotland. In 1928, bacteriologist Alexander Fleming made a chance discovery. From a contaminated experiment, he found a powerful antibiotic, penicillin.

Old photograph of Darvel situated ten miles East of Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. The River Irvine flows through the town and once powered local mills. Sir William Wallace, the Scottish freedom fighter, has also been associated with this area. 15th century minstrel Blind Harry wrote in his poem The Wallace that Wallace and his men defeated an English force at the hill in 1296 during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Blind Harry also tells of how the English general, Fenwick, who supposedly killed Wallace's father, was killed during the battle. Maps of the area now name a mound to the east of Loudoun Hill as Wallace's Grave. A battle between Robert the Bruce and the English was also fought there on 10 May 1307.

Old Photograph Embo Scotland

Old photograph of the railway station in Embo located 2 miles North of Dornoch, Scotland. From 1902 until 1960 there ran a branch line linking Dornoch with the main railway line at The Mound. This light railway went through several settlements along the route including the village of Embo. In 1902 Embo was a thriving fishing village and the railway proved to be a boon to the fishwives who could follow the migrating herring around the East coast, gutting and packing the fish. As with the entire region of East Sutherland, the end of the 19th century and the collapse of the fishing industry coincided with the decline of Gaelic as the majority language of the people. Embo is informally twinned with Kaunakakai on the island of Molokai in Hawaii.
