The crofting system prevailed mainly in the Highlands and Islands. Before the clan system was proscribed after the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion, tilling rights as well as grazing rights were all held communally.

Old Photograph Lennoxtown Scotland

Old photograph of shops, houses and people in Lennoxtown, Scotland. A Scottish town in East Dunbartonshire, at the foot of the Campsie Fells, which are just to the north. A significant event in the history of the locality was the establishment of the calico printing works at Lennoxmill during the late 1780s. Another industry which was important to the development of Lennoxtown was soon established, when in 1797, Charles Mackintosh, born 1766, died 1843, and his associates, set up chemical Alum Works near Lennoxmill. The principal products of his works was Alum, a chemical used in the textile industry. Shale and and Alum schist, the basic ingredients required in the chemical processes, were mined in the area. Because of the need to keep his industrial processes secret, these works were referred to as the Secret Works. The owner of the works, Charles Mackintosh, was famous because of his development of a waterproof fabric used to make clothing, but he, together with Charles Tennant, also devised a revolutionary bleaching powder.

Old Photograph Two Peat Carts Orkney Scotland

Old photograph of two Peat Carts on the Orkney Island, Scotland. Crofters bringing home the peat. Years ago, peat, a product of decayed vegetation found in boggy moorland, was the only fuel for many people in the Highlands and Islands. The fires in crofters cottages were kept constantly alight, smouldering with two or three peats placed within the kitchen range and never allowed to go out. At night a really dry lighter peat was preferred, and just a few big peats were placed flat on top of the fire to burn slowly and safely. Then from the remaining embers, the following morning’s fire was rekindled.

Old Photograph Crofter Carding Wool Scotland

Old photograph of a Crofter carding wool in a cottage on the Shetland Islands, Scotland. For carding, the wool was put between two flat boards with wire teeth which were scraped together. It was tiring work and the women’s wrists and arms would often ache. In the days before the spinning wheel was introduced, a spindle and whorl were used; merely a rod thrust into a disc of wood. The task was laborious, but being repetitive was often combined with other chores, like the herding of cattle or sheep.
