Old Photograph Crofters Cottage South Uist Scotland

Old photograph of Crofters Cottage on South Uist, Scotland. South Uist was held by the MacDonalds of Clan Ranald who made a good living from kelp harvesting owing to the demand for kelp around the turn of the 19th century. At that time population of the island was around 7300. After the Napoleonic Wars however, competition from imported Barilla resulted in a collapse in the price for kelp and the chief of Clan Ranald found himself facing bankruptcy. South Uist was sold to Lt. Colonel John Gordon of Cluny in 1837 and the fortunes of the island's tenants went downhill from that point. He initiated Highland Clearances to make way for sheep farming, supplanting the crofters with farmers from the Borders, who brought flocks of Blackface sheep. As a result, there was large scale emigration from the island.

Fishing remains central to the islands' economy today. Located at 60 High Street Newburgh, this marriage stone records the marriage of Thomas Anderson and Janet Williamson in 1759. It is a beautiful, and well preserved, example of a Scottish marriage lintel. These stones served as a record of a marriage, especially important in aristocratic families and also sometimes practised amongst the newly established middle classes. They were sometimes added to a building which was constructed specifically as the new family home for the married couple, especially when the dowry was large, or were carved into a pre-existing lintel. The stones also clearly indicated the ownership of the building to onlookers at the time as well as serving as a record for posterity of both marital bliss and often also of social advancement.

The Mackenzies were clan leaders in the traditional sense and were known for their attachment to their tenants. During the 19th century, Sir Hector Mackenzie and his sons Sir Francis and Dr John Mackenzie refused to evict a single tenant during the clearances, despite the estate running at a loss. As a result, evicted Highlanders from other communities came to live in the area and has caused Gairloch to maintain a thriving community even today.

By 1588 the town had relocated from the ruin at the top of Duns Law to its present location at its foot.
