Tour Scotland Photographs Old Church St Monans East Neuk Of Fife January 7th

Tour Scotland photograph shot this morning of the old church by the sea in St Monans, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. St Monans Church is situated within its kirkyard just to the west of the village on the very edge of the sea. It has a very dramatic setting, perched on a low rock, reached over a small valley with a burn. As seen from most directions it has the sea as a backdrop. A more modern cemetery stands further westwards on the upper slopes of the little hill. This contains the local war memorial. Standing at the extreme west end of this a romantic ruin can be viewed across fields, again perched on the sea edge. It is often said that St Monans is the church nearest the sea in the whole of Scotland. I shot these photographs at 11.30am, this morning.

Old Photograph Paddle Steamer Greenock Scotland

Old photograph of a Paddle Steamer at Greenock near Glasgow, Scotland. Greenock is said to have begun sometime in the latter part of the 1500s. At first it was just a small village focused on fishing. In the following century a pier and breakwater were created on the banks of the Clyde. Greenock became largely involved in shipbuilding. The small harbour was converted into a main port in the very early 1700s. Greenock flourished as many trade ships from the Caribbean came to the port bearing sugar. Records show that by the year 1850 there were some 400 sugar ships docking at Greenock.

Old Photograph Crofter Handspinning On Isle Of Skye Scotland

Old photograph of a Scottish Crofter handspinnning outside a cottage on the Isle Of Skye, Scotland. Spinning was a female task done in the home to provide bedding and clothing for the family. Most Highlanders lived in remote areas and small villages, so that all their possessions were hand crafted. It wasn't until the beginning of the 18th century that males started to spin as an occupation as part of " spinning schools " at the very start of the industrial revolution.

Old Photograph Grinding Oats Isle Of Skye Scotland

Old photograph of a Crofter woman grinding oats outside her cottage on the Isle Of Skye, Scotland. In Scotland, oatmeal is created by grinding oats into a coarse powder. It may be ground fine, medium, or coarse, or rolled, or the groats may be chopped in two or three pieces to make what is described as pinhead oatmeal. Oatmeal has a long history in Scottish culinary tradition because oats are better suited than wheat to the country's low temperatures and high humidity. As a result oats became the staple grain of Scotland. The ancient universities of Scotland had a holiday called Meal Monday to permit students to return to their farms and collect more oats for food.

Fort William is now a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles.

Tour Scotland Photograph Statue Of Robert Burns Dumfries

Tour Scotland Photograph of the Robert Burns statue in Dumfries, Scotland. In May 1877 the town council of Dumfries adopted a proposal to erect a statue to Robert Burns, the town's most illustrious inhabitant. A site was chosen in Church Place, at the junction of the High Street, Castle Street and Buccleuch Street and the local historian William McDowall was appointed secretary of a committee formed to progress the project. The committee approved a model for the statue proposed by the artist Amelia Paton Hill. She had exhibited portrait busts, animal figures and genre groups at the Royal Academy, and all these elements are to be found in her statue of Burns, which is probably her best known work. The statue was carved in Carrara by Italian craftsmen working to Amelia Hill's model. It was unveiled by the Earl of Rosebery on 6th April 1882. In the century since it has been moved on several occasions due to road improvements in the vicinity.

Old Shetland. Based on the extensive collection of old photographs and postcards gathered over the years by Shetland native Douglas Smith, this beautifully presented book provides fascinating insight into the lives of Shetlanders from the 19th to the mid 20th centuries. As is usual in a fishing and maritime community, the men folk were typically absent for long periods of time at sea and the role of women was vital to the life of the islands. They are pictured here performing task as varied as gutting the herring catch, knitting the complex Fair Isle patterns and gossamer thin shawls for which the islands are famous, cutting and drying peat for fuel, shelling bait for the fishermen and burning seaweed for Kelp to supply chemical manufacturers. The wartime period 1939 to 1945 and the island’s crucial role as a lifeline to occupied Norway via the “Shetland Bus” is detailed and there are some fine examples of the unique and mysterious Brochs, substantial round stone defensive towers located throughout the islands. The herring and whaling boats, social occasions such as football and dancing, not to mention the annual Up-Helly-Aa fire festival celebration are all covered in this very comprehensive volume. Old Photograph Kirkcaldy Fife Scotland

Old photograph of a Tram, shops and people on the High Street in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. From the early 16th century, the establishment of a harbour at the East Burn confirmed the town's early role as an important trading port. The town also began to develop around the salt, coal mining and nail making industries. The production of linen which followed in 1672 was later instrumental in the introduction of floorcloth in 1847 by linen manufacturer, Michael Nairn. In 1877 this in turn contributed to linoleum, which became the town's most successful industry: Kirkcaldy was a world producer until well into the mid 1960s. Kirkcaldy has long been nicknamed the Lang Toun, Scots for " long town " in reference to the early town's main street. The street later reached a length of nearly 4 miles, connecting the burgh to the neighbouring settlements of Linktown, Pathhead, Sinclairtown and Gallatown, which became part of the town in 1876. The formerly separate burgh of Dysart was merged into Kirkcaldy in 1930.
