Old Photograph Grant Street Burghead Scotland

Old photograph of shop, car, houses and cottages on Grant Street in Burghead located eight miles North West of Elgin, Moray, Scotland. The present town was built between 1805 and 1809, destroying in the process more than half of the site of an important Pictish hill fort. General Roy’s map shows the defences as they existed in the 18th century but he wrongly attributed them to the Romans. The fort was probably a major Pictish centre and was where carved slabs depicting bulls were found; they are known as the " Burghead Bulls ". A chambered well of some considerable antiquity was discovered in 1809 and walls and a roof were later added to help preserve it. Each year on 11 January a fire festival known as the Burning of the Clavie takes place; it is thought that the festival dates back to the 17th century, although it could easily predate this by several centuries. Burghead is often known by locals as The Broch, a nickname also applied to Fraserburgh in nearby Aberdeenshire.

Old Photograph Drummond Street Comrie Perthshire Scotland

Old photograph of cottages and houses on Drummond Street in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Comrie's early prosperity derived from weaving. This was mostly done as piecework in people's own cottages and houses. Comrie was also important as a droving town. Highland Cattle destined for the markets of the Scottish Lowlands and ultimately England would be driven south from their grazing areas in the Highlands. River crossings, such as at Comrie, were important staging posts on the way south. Much of the land around Comrie was owned by the Drummond family, Earls of Perth, latterly Earls of Ancaster, whose main seat was Drummond Castle, south of Crieff. Another branch of the Drummonds owned Drummondernoch, to the west of the town. Aberuchill Castle, however, just outside Comrie was originally a Campbell seat. Comrie underwent something of a renaissance in the early 19th century and Victorian periods as an attractive location for wealthy residents and visitors. Robert the Bruce, king of Scotland, the outlaw Rob Roy McGregor and Scotland's internationally renowned national poet Robert Burns all mentioned their stays in the village Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

Old Photograph Viaduct Glenfarg Perthshire Scotland

Old photograph of the viaduct in Glenfarg, Perthshire, Scotland. This viaduct carried no longer used Perth to Kinross to Cowdenbeath, Fife line of the former North British Railway across the River Farg. The line closed to regular passenger traffic on 5 January 1970.
