Tour Scotland Autumn Video Scottish Crannog Loch Tay Perthshire
Tour Scotland Autumn video of the Scottish Crannog Centre, Loch Tay, Perthshire, Scotland. A crannog is a type of ancient loch dwelling found throughout Scotland and Ireland dating from 5,000 years ago. Many crannogs were built out in the water as defensive homesteads and represented symbols of power and wealth. The Scottish Crannog Centre features a unique reconstruction of an early Iron Age loch dwelling. Ben Lawers in the background, on north shore of Loch Tay is the 10th highest mountain in the British Isles.

Tour Scotland video of Loch Tay by Kenmore, Perthshire, Scotland. Overcast and misty afternoon at Loch Tay. This is a long narrow loch of around 14.55 miles long, and typically around 1 to 1½ miles wide, following the line of the valley from the south west to north east. It is the sixth largest loch in Scotland by area and over 490 feet deep at its deepest. The loch is a popular spot for salmon fishing.

Tour Scotland Winter photograph of a traditional red telephone box on the banks of South Loch Tay, Kenmore, Perthshire, Scotland. The red telephone box, a telephone kiosk for a public telephone designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, was a familiar sight on the streets of the United Kingdom, Malta, Bermuda and Gibraltar. Despite a reduction in their numbers in recent years, the traditional British red telephone kiosk can still be seen in many places throughout the UK, and in current or former British colonies around the world. The colour red was chosen to make them easy to spot.

The Loch Tay Boat Song
When I've done the work of day

Down the waters of Loch Tay

With a merry mouth below
She's my beauteous nighean ruadh
She's my joy and sorrow too
Though I own she is not true

For my heart's a boat in tow

As I sing hori horo
Nighean ruadh, your lovely hair
Has more beauty I declare
Than all the tresses fair
From Killin to Aberfeldy
Be they lint-white, gold or brown
Be they blacker than the sloe
They mean not as much to me
As a melting flake of snow
And her dance is like the gleam
Of the sunlight on the stream
And the songs the wee folk sing
They're the songs she sings at milking
But my heart is full of woe

The Gaelic words "nighean ruadh" mean "red-haired girl".
"Hori horo" are used by the Scots to indicate sorrow.

Tour Scotland photograph of Loch Tay, Perthshire, Scotland. In ancient times, in the Iron Age, people lived on defensible, man made islands on the loch, called crannogs. More than 20 submerged crannogs have been identified in the loch. The loch is a popular spot for salmon fishing.

Tour Scotland Photograph And Video Crannog Loch Tay
Tour Scotland photograph of a Crannog in Loch Tay, Perthshire, Scotland. Crannogs are an ancient type of loch dwelling found throughout Scotland. People lived in them from as early as 5,000 years ago, up until the 17th century AD. They were built out in the water as defensive homesteads, secure from wild animals and invaders. Many crannogs were originally timber-built round houses supported on stilts driven into the lochbed. Today they appear as submerged stony mounds or tree-covered islands. There are 18 crannogs in Loch Tay and archaeologists have been excavating them underwater for several years.

Tour Scotland Photograph From Above Loch Tay
Tour Scotland photograph shot from above Loch Tay, Perthshire, Scotland. Ben Lawers on the North shore of Loch Tay is at 1214 metres the 10th highest mountain in the British Isles, and is the highest peak in a group of seven munros. The Munros were first listed by Sir Hugh Munro, born 1856, died 1919, in his Munros Tables, published in the Journal of the Scottish Mountaineering Club in 1891. Sir Hugh divided the summits into 283 separate mountains, now known as the Munros.
