Tour Scotland Photographs Balcomie Castle Crail East Neuk Of Fife

Tour Scotland photograph of Balcomie Castle by Crail, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. A sunny, though chilly afternoon near Balcomie Castle which is Fife's most easterly castle. Perhaps its most famous brush with history took place on the 12th of June 1538 when Mary of Guise landed at nearby Fife Ness. She decided to stay at the castle while couriers were sent to James V who was 10 miles up the road in St Andrews. He didn't hang about and promptly arrived at Balcomie to collect his future bride and escort her into St Andrews.

Tour Scotland Photograph Video Crail Church

Tour Scotland photograph of Crail Church, Fife, Scotland. The most notable building in Crail is the 13th century parish church. There has been a church on this site since at least the twelfth century. The earliest known parish church on this site was a two celled Norman building, which is represented by small fragments in the chancel. It was consecrated in 1243 to Saint Maelrubha and after a successful petition by the Prioress of Haddington, became Collegiate in 1517, by which time it was known as St. Mary's. Between its foundation and 1815 there were many modifications and additions. In 1815 Robert Balfour undertook the first major renovation and a second was carried out by Judith Campbell in 1963.

Tour Scotland Photograph Lobster Shop Crail East Neuk Of Fife

Tour Scotland photograph of the Lobster Shop in Crail, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The earliest records of lobster fishing in Scotland date back to the 12th century when lobster was caught by hand using ‘crooks’ and hoop nets. With the development of baited traps, exploitation on a more commercial basis was developed, and today creel fishing for the European lobster, Homarus gammarus, supports very important local fisheries around the Scottish coast
