Old Photograph Tongland Bridge And Viaduct Scotland

Old photograph of Tongland Bridge and Viaduct over the River Dee near Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Tongland Bridge, a stone arch bridge was constructed in 1806 by civil engineer Thomas Telford. Telford was assisted in the Works by resident civil engineer, A Blane. The Tongland railway viaduct formerly carried the Kirkcudbright branch, from Castle Douglas, of the former Glasgow and South Western Railway over the River Dee at the head of its estuary. It was opened by the Kirkcudbright Railway on 7 March 1864, and closed to regular passenger traffic, with the line as a whole, on 3 May 1965.
