Nearby is Glenbarr Abbey, an 18th century residence, built by Col. Matthew Macalister, 1st Laird of Glenbarr. Today it serves as a visitor centre for the history of Clan MacAlister.

My great great grandfather and his family lived in Glen Barr in the 1860s. He and his oldest son were shoemakers. His youngest, my great grandfather, went off to be a merchant seaman about 1870 or so.
