Tour Scotland very short 4K ealy Autumn travel video clip of a Scotsman wearing a kilt and and Sporran and walking by St Magnus Bay on ancestry, genealogy, history visit and trip to the West coast of mainland Shetland Islands, Britain, United Kingdom. The remarkable circular shape of the bay has led geologists to suggest it may have originally formed as a meteor impact crater roughly 30 million years ago. The bay boasts an incredibly complex geological coastline formed of ancient gneiss and Devonian Old Red Sandstone shaped by glacial activity. Until the 18th century a small island within the bay served as a isolated leper colony, though modern historical consensus suggests many of the inhabitants likely suffered from severe vitamin deficiencies rather than true leprosy. The coastlines of the bay feature prehistoric settlements, including Norse and Neolithic house remains. During the 15th to 17th centuries, German merchants from the Hanseatic League established trading booths around the bay, using artificial pebble beaches to dry fish for export. The sheltered inlets within the bay became a highly strategic naval base during the First World War hosting the Royal Navy's 10th Cruiser Squadron, which patrolled the northern seas. The RMS Oceanic, famously known at one point as the world's largest ship, sailed from this base before running aground and being wrecked off the nearby island of Foula in 1914.
