Old photograph of the Clan Gathering and Highland Games in Braemar, Royal Deeside, Scotland. The annual Highland Games Gathering is held at Braemar on the first Saturday in September and is traditionally attended by the British Royal Family. Since Queen Victoria's time the reigning Monarch has been the patron of the Braemar Royal Highland Society.

Old Photograph Crosshill Scotland

Old photograph of cottages, shop, Bus, children and people in Crosshill, Ayrshire, Scotland. Crosshill is located 3 miles south east of Maybole in South Ayrshire. The area was first settled by Irish immigrants who employed themselves in the business of hand-loom weaving. They constructed many single-storey cottages a few of which may still be found.

Old Photograph Drumclog Scotland

Old photograph of Drumclog, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The Battle of Drumclog was fought on 1 June 1679, between a group of Covenanters and the forces of John Graham of Claverhouse, at High Drumclog, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The Battle of Drumclog is significant as the opening battle of the 1679 Covenanter uprising. It was a resounding victory for the Covenanters, boosting recruitment to their cause, but the uprising would be quickly suppressed at Bothwell Bridge a few weeks later, sparking a period of brutal reprisal against the Covenanters.

Witch Hunting in Scotland. Between the late sixteenth and early eighteenth centuries Scottish courts prosecuted hundreds of women and men for the crime of witchcraft, an offence that involved the alleged practice of maleficent magic and the worship of the devil. Scottish witch-hunts claimed far more victims than the prosecutions that took place in the more heavily populated kingdom of England. Witch-Hunting in Scotland presents a fresh perspective on the trial and execution of these people for inflicting harm on their neighbours and making pacts with the devil. Brian P. Levack draws on law, politics and religion to explain the intensity of Scottish witch-hunting. Topics discussed include the distinctive features of the Scottish criminal justice system, the use of torture to extract confessions, the intersection of witch-hunting with local and national politics, the relationship between state-building and witch-hunting and the role of James VI. Scottish Calvinism and the determination of zealous Scottish clergy and magistrates to achieve a godly society, are also examined as key factors. In 1907 a group of local people cut into the hill above the village at Mains of Pitcairns Farm and along the Dunning burn to create 9 holes of golf. Sheep grazed there and it was not uncommon in these early days to have to sweep the sheep droppings off the greens.

A royal stronghold that was granted to the Douglas family in 1390, the castle is first known to have been used as a state prison in 1316 when King Robert the Bruce imprisoned John of Lorne there. The castle’s most famous prisoner was Mary Queen of Scots, imprisoned there from 1567 until her escape in 1568.
