The wooden boat is the Reaper, a Fifie sailing herring drifter, the most popular design of fishing boat on the East Coast of Scotland for the greater part of the 19th and early 20th centuries. This is the town where I was raised in Scotland. I love this place.

Tour Scotland Video Harbour St Monans East Neuk Of Fife

Tour Scotland travel video of the harbour on ancestry, history visit and trip to St Monans, East Neuk of Fife. St Monans, often spelt St Monance, is a village and parish in the East Neuk of Fife and is named after the legendary Saint Monan. Situated approximately 3 miles west of Anstruther, this small community, whose inhabitants formerly made their living mainly from fishing, is now a tourist destination situated on the Fife Coastal Walking Path. Like other small East Neuk towns, St Monans is rich in vernacular fisher and merchant houses of the 17th to early 19th centuries, with characteristic old Scots features, e.g. forestairs, crow-stepped gables, datestones, pantiled roofs. The original settlement was, according to early sources, known as Inverin, Invery, Inverie, Finvirie, Inweerie, Inverry or even elsewhere Innerny and possibly derived from the Gaelic for at the mouth of a stream. The origin of the present name, St Monans, although similarly there were other spellings St Monance persisting until quite recently, is derived from a 6th century Irish abbot bishop, St Moinenn, from Clonfert who died in 571. One tradition is that he was killed by Vikings there nearby on the Isle of May, and another is that his relics came over with the Scots monks when they originally settled in St Monans circa 870

Tour Scotland Photographs Old Church St Monans East Neuk Of Fife January 7th

Tour Scotland photograph shot this morning of the old church by the sea in St Monans, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. St Monans Church is situated within its kirkyard just to the west of the village on the very edge of the sea. It has a very dramatic setting, perched on a low rock, reached over a small valley with a burn. As seen from most directions it has the sea as a backdrop. A more modern cemetery stands further westwards on the upper slopes of the little hill. This contains the local war memorial. Standing at the extreme west end of this a romantic ruin can be viewed across fields, again perched on the sea edge. It is often said that St Monans is the church nearest the sea in the whole of Scotland. I shot these photographs at 11.30am, this morning.

Tour Scotland photograph shot this morning of the Millais Viewpoint by the River Tay, Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. This unique sculpture by Timothy Shutter, 1997, can be found on looking west across the Tay from the Perth Sculpture Trail. One of Millais' famous pictures is "Autumn Leaves" and these form part of the frame. The cut corners refer to immortality and are reminders of Effie Gray, Millais' wife. John Everett Millais painted many of his famous works in Perth.

Old Photograph Paddle Steamer Greenock Scotland

Old photograph of a Paddle Steamer at Greenock near Glasgow, Scotland. Greenock is said to have begun sometime in the latter part of the 1500s. At first it was just a small village focused on fishing. In the following century a pier and breakwater were created on the banks of the Clyde. Greenock became largely involved in shipbuilding. The small harbour was converted into a main port in the very early 1700s. Greenock flourished as many trade ships from the Caribbean came to the port bearing sugar. Records show that by the year 1850 there were some 400 sugar ships docking at Greenock.

Old Photograph Crofter Handspinning On Isle Of Skye Scotland

Old photograph of a Scottish Crofter handspinnning outside a cottage on the Isle Of Skye, Scotland. Spinning was a female task done in the home to provide bedding and clothing for the family. Most Highlanders lived in remote areas and small villages, so that all their possessions were hand crafted. It wasn't until the beginning of the 18th century that males started to spin as an occupation as part of " spinning schools " at the very start of the industrial revolution.

Old Photograph Grinding Oats Isle Of Skye Scotland

Old photograph of a Crofter woman grinding oats outside her cottage on the Isle Of Skye, Scotland. In Scotland, oatmeal is created by grinding oats into a coarse powder. It may be ground fine, medium, or coarse, or rolled, or the groats may be chopped in two or three pieces to make what is described as pinhead oatmeal. Oatmeal has a long history in Scottish culinary tradition because oats are better suited than wheat to the country's low temperatures and high humidity. As a result oats became the staple grain of Scotland. The ancient universities of Scotland had a holiday called Meal Monday to permit students to return to their farms and collect more oats for food.
