Tour Scotland Photograph Video Sea Wall

Tour Scotland photograph of the sea wall and houses in, Pittenweem, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The white houses with red roofs illustrate the classic East Neuk building style, influenced by trade with the Low Countries (Belgium and the Netherlands). The East Neuk offered natural trading ports for Dutch and Belgian captains as they sailed up past the east coast of England. These ships brought red pantiles as ballast, and the locals soon found them to be excellent roofing material.

Tour Scotland Video Clam Boat Pittenweem East Neuk Of Fife

Tour Scotland video of a clam boat returning to the harbour Pittenweem, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The 19th century saw the greatest growth in sea fishing on the Scottish east coast. In the early years of that century the boats were very small, made of wood and were either one or two masted. They were not expensive to build and small repairs were carried out by the fishermen themselves. These early boats needed to be light so they could be dragged up the beaches.

Recollections of East Fife Fisher Folk. During the early part of the 20th century, fishing still formed one of the main industries in the famous corner of Fife. Belle Patrick spent her first 30 years in Anstruther, and in the mid-1960s wrote this memoir to put on record the fishing way of life, believing it to be "so independent".
