Alexander Selkirk, born 1676 died 1721, was a Scottish sailor who spent four years as a castaway after being marooned on an uninhabited island. His travels provided the inspiration for Daniel Defoe's famous novel Robinson Crusoe. He was the son of a shoemaker and tanner.
