Old photograph of Muirtown, Inverness, Scotland. An expansion of the Caledonian Canal close to its northeastern termination, the Muirtown Basin lies between Clachnaharry and Muirtown a mile northwest of Inverness city centre. Planned in the early 19th century as a second harbour for the city by the canal's engineer Thomas Telford, it could not cope with the size of ships which were soon in use and thus never fulfilled its potential. It now serves as a marina. Immediately to the south of the basin are the Muirtown Locks, a flight of four locks on the Caledonian Canal at Muirtown, a mile west northwest of Inverness city centre. The Muirtown Swing Bridge crosses the canal immediately to the north.

Tour Scotland Video The Fishermen's Song

Tour Scotland The Fishermen's Song Lament for the Fisherman's Wife by Silly Wizard. A beautiful and sad song, sung by Andy M. Stewart of Silly Wizard.

By the storm-torn shoreline a woman is standing
The spray strung like jewels in her hair
And the sea tore the rocks near the desolate landing
as though it had known she stood there.

Chorus:
But she has come down to condemn that wild ocean
For the murderous loss of her man.
His boat sailed out on Wednesday morning,
And it's feared she's gone down with all hands.

Oh and white were the wave-caps
And wild was their parting
So fierce is the warring of love,
But she prayed to the gods
Both of men and of sailors
Not to cast their cruel nets o'er her love.

There's a school on the hill
Where the songs of dead fathers
Are led toward tempests and gales,
Where their God-given wings
Are clipped close to their bodies,
And their eyes are bound-'round with ships' sails.

What force leads a man
To a life filled with danger
High on seas or a mile underground?
It's when need is his master
And poverty's no stranger,
And there's no other work to be found.

Tour Scotland Video Archibald MacDonald of Keppoch

Tour Scotland video Archibald MacDonald of Keppoch by Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas. Alasdair Fraser was born on the 14of May 1955 in Clackmannan, Scotland. He is a famous Scottish fiddler. The tune was first published by the Scots fiddler, collector and composer Captain Simon Fraser, born 1773, died 1852, of Ardachie, near Fort Augustus. Fraser's work The Airs and Melodies Peculiar to the Highlands of Scotland and the Isles contained many works collected from various sources during the period 1715-1745. The MacDonalds of Keppoch were a distinguished branch of Clan MacDonald, who supported the Stewart monarchs in the 17th century, culminating with their participation in the Jacobite risings of the 18th century. As a result of their support for the Jacobite cause they lost their lands in Lochaber. Although it has not been determined which individual has been honored in the title, an Archibald MacDonald lived from 1678 to 1745, dying just prior to the entrance of the MacDonald’s of Keppoch on the side of Bonnie Prince Charlie in his ill-fated attempt to gain the crown of Scotland and England.
