Tour Scotland Video River Tay Perth March 31st

Tour Scotland video shot this evening of the River Tay in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Very windy by the River Tay around 6pm, this evening. Perth Bridge, also known as Smeaton's Bridge and, locally, the Old Bridge is a toll free bridge in the town of Perth, Scotland. It spans the River Tay, connecting Perth, on the eastern side of the river, to Bridgend, on its western side, carrying both automotive and pedestrian traffic of West Bridge Street. The bridge was completed in October 1771, which places it in the Georgian era; however, its plaque states the year in which construction began, 1766, as its "built" date. The engineer of its construction was John Smeaton, for whom the bridge is named.

Tour Scotland Photographs Highland Regiment Memorial

Tour Scotland photograph of the 51st Highland Division Memorial in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Probably the most famous British infantry division of the Second World War, formed from battalions of the Scottish Highland regiments, which fought in France, in North Africa, Sicily, the Normandy landings and the subsequent campaign through France, into the Low Countries and finally, into Germany. The Division was part of the pre-war Territorial Army and included nine battalions of TA soldiers as well as artillery, engineers, medics and other support units. In the campaign of 1940 the Highland Division served under French command and most of the Division was forced to surrender to Erwin Rommel at St Valery. Reformed in Britain the Highland Division was sent to North Africa in time to take a major part in the Battle of El Alamein. Following the North African and Sicilian campaigns, the Division returned to Britain to prepare for the invasion of France. The Highlanders fought in Normandy and took part in the break-out battles, serving under First Canadian Army. Units of the Division were the first Allied soldiers to enter Germany. The Division also provided the first British troops to land on the far bank of the Rhine in March 1945

Old Photographs Dunning Perthshire Scotland

Old photograph of buildings, shops and people in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland. Dunning is situated at the south east of Strathearn in Perthshire. St Serf's church in the centre of the village was rebuilt in the 19th century but the tower is early medieval, 2th century, with two-light arched Anglo-Saxon windows like Muthill Church. Like so many Strathearn villages, Dunning was burnt after the Battle of Sheriffmuir by the retreating Jacobite army. However the village retains it's earlier pattern with later buildings, 18th and 19th century, gathered around the church. A standing stone outside the village is said to mark the site of the Battle of Duncrub in 964AD. A local woman, Maggie Wall, was burnt as a witch in 1657 and a monument commemorates this sad event.

Old Photograph Will Fyffe Scotland

Old photograph of Will Fyffe from Dundee, Scotland. Will Fyffe. born 16th February 1885, died 14th December 1947, was a major star of the 1930s and 1940s, a star of stage, screen and vinyl. Fyffe travelled extensively throughout Scotland and the rest of Britain, playing the numerous music halls of the time, where he performed his sketches and sang his songs in his own inimitable style. In addition, Fyffe appeared in 23 major films of the era, both American and British, sometimes starring, and recorded over 30 songs, delivered with his own unique style. His singer songwriter skills are still well known to us today and whereas the memory of his contemporaries may continue to fade, Will has become immortalised for his rendition of his own composition, " I Belong To Glasgow ". This song, which has been covered by the likes of Danny Kaye, Eartha Kitt, Gracie Fields and Kirk Douglas, is still as fresh today as it was then. " I Belong To Glasgow " is one of a very small number of pre-war songs still well-known today. According to Albert Mackie's The Scotch Comedians, 1973, Fyffe got the inspiration for the song from a drunk he met at Glasgow Central Station. The drunk was " genial and demonstrative " and " laying off about Karl Marx and John Barleycorn with equal enthusiasm ". Fyffe asked him: " Do you belong to Glasgow ?" and the man replied: " At the moment, at the moment, Glasgow belongs to me. " As a result of this song, Will Fyffe became forever associated with Glasgow, even though he was born 70 miles away, in the east coast city of Dundee.

The Black Watch: A Concise History. The Black Watch was formed at Aberfeldy in Perthshire in the early eighteenth century as an independent security force, or ‘watch’, to guard the approaches to the lawless areas of the Scottish Highlands. Instantly recognisable due to the famous red hackle cap badge and the traditional dark blue and green government tartan kilt from which it got its name, The Black Watch was renowned as one of the great fighting regiments of the British Army and served with distinction in all major conflicts from the War of Austrian Succession onwards. In a highly controversial move, the regiment served under the operational control of the US Army during the counter-insurgency war in Iraq in December 2004. The Black Watch prided itself on being a ‘family regiment’, with sons following fathers into its ranks, and this new concise history reflects the strong sense of identity which was created over the centuries. In 2006, as part of a radical review of the country’s defence policy, The Black Watch was amalgamated into the new Royal Regiment of Scotland. This new account of the famous regiment is therefore a timely memorial to its long and distinguished history. The Black Watch: A Concise History.
