Steam Train By Loch Eilt On History Visit To Lochaber In The West Highlands Of Scotland

Loch Eilt is a freshwater loch that separates the traditional districts of Morar to the North and Moidart to the South. Loch Eilt has been used as a location in several films. Scotsman Walking Wearing Kilt By Brechin Castle On Summer History Visit To Angus Scotland

A fortress has occupied the site since at least the 12th or 13th century, initially serving as a defensive base for Scottish kings. In 1296, during the Wars of Scottish Independence, King Edward I of England utilized the castle to receive the formal submission of the Scottish King, John Balliol. In 1303, Edward I returned with an invading army. The Scottish defenders, led by Sir Thomas Maule, famously resisted the English forces for three weeks. Maule mocked the attackers by walking the ramparts and casually dusting off debris thrown by English catapults. He was eventually killed by a missile, after which the garrison surrendered. For nearly 300 years, Brechin remained a royal stronghold or passed through families like the Erskine Earls of Mar. In 1643, Patrick Maule, the 1st Earl of Panmure, purchased the estate, which at the time featured a simple three-storey L-shaped house. James Maule, the 4th Earl of Panmure, backed the Jacobite Rising of 1715. Following the rebellion's failure, the Crown forfeited the family's estates. However, his son Henry later repurchased the property. Through marriage, the property eventually merged into the assets of the Ramsay family, the Earls of Dalhousie, who made Brechin Castle their primary residence around 1900. The present-day castle layout is largely the result of extensive reconstructions executed between 1696 and 1711 by renowned architect Alexander Edward for the 4th Earl of Panmure.
