Ormaig was once the largest and most prosperous village on the island before its population was forcibly evicted during the 19th century Highland Clearances. The name Ormaig originates from the Old Norse Orm-Vikr, translating to either " Bay of Serpents " or " Bay of Longships, " highlighting the area's early Viking heritage. In the 1840s and 1850s, the notorious landlord Francis William Clark cleared the tenants from the land to replace them with more profitable sheep pastures. This devastation, coupled with the potato blight famine, triggered a mass forced migration to mainland Scotland, Australia, and North America.
