Old travel Blog photograph of the John Hately grocers shop in Dunbar, Scotland. Dunbar is the birthplace of the explorer, naturalist and influential conservationist John Muir. The house in which Muir was born is located on the High Street, and has been converted into a museum. There is also a commemorative statue beside the town clock, and John Muir Country Park is located to the north west of the town. The eastern section of the John Muir Way coastal path starts from the harbour. One of the two campuses to Dunbar Primary School: John Muir Campus, is named in his honour.

Old Travel Blog Photograph Kettleholm Scotland


Old travel Blog photograph of houses and a vintage car in Kettleholm Lockerbie, Scotland. Kettleholm village is a relatively new settlement. It was built in the course of the 19th century as a residential settlement on the estate of Castlemilk, which was built in 1866 for the politician Robert Jardine, 1st Baronet. Jardine was born at Edinburgh the son of David Jardine of Muir House, Lockerbie, Dumfries and his wife Rachel Johnstone. In 1865 he became head of Jardine, Matheson and Company, one of the largest Far East trading houses based in Hong Kong. He married Margaret Seton Hamilton, daughter of John Buchanan Hamilton, and sister and heiress of John Hamilton Buchanan, Chief of Clan Buchanan, in April 1867. His wife died a year later. He died on 17 February 1905 aged 79.

Old travel Blog photograph of Bisset`s Hotel in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. Gullane is part of the John Muir Way, a long distance walking footpath along the coast between Musselburgh and Dunglass. It was in 1892 that Mr. James Bisset, a butler at Archerfield House, built the hotel which was originally called The Royal Archers Hotel.However, the name was changed to The New Hotel, The Late New Hotel and finally Bisset’s Hotel. Gullane is the home of Muirfield Golf Course which has h osted The Open Championship on numerous occasions. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

Old Travel Blog Photograph Plough Inn Tranent Scotland


Old travel Blog photograph of people outside the Plough Inn in Tranent, Scotland. Tranent is a town in East Lothian, Scotland. It is approximately eleven miles east of Edinburgh. It is one of the oldest towns in East Lothian. The Massacre of Tranent took place in 1797, when local people were killed by soldiers after protesting against conscription into the British Army. One of the 12 victims Jackie Crookston is depicted on the memorial that commemorates the dead in Civic Square.
