Old Travel Blog Photograph Loch Beinn a 'Mheadhoin Scotland

Old travel Blog photograph of Loch Beinn a 'Mheadhoin located in the Scottish Highlands in the almost uninhabited valley of Glen Affric, Scotland. South West of the town of Cannich it can only be reached from there on a narrow road. The loch is naturally fed by rapids from Loch Affric in the west. The loch also receives water from the higher Loch Mullardoch through an underground pipe, which was previously used for power generation. In the East, on the one hand, the loch drains naturally into the river Beauly, on the other hand via a pipeline that drains water to a hydropower plant near Fasnakyle near Cannich.

Old Travel Blog Photograph Sango Bay Scotland

Old travel Blog photograph of Sango Bay by Durness, Northern Sutherland, Scotland. Sango Bay offers camping and caravan sites and is popular with surfers. Surrounded by low cliffs, it is also of interest to geologists, providing some classic exposures of the Moine Thrust zone. The settlement of Sangomore lies to the southwest and the Smoo Cave is a half mile to the southeast. The northwest corner of Sutherland, traditionally known as the Province of Strathnaver, was not incorporated into Sutherland until 1601. This was the home of the powerful and warlike Clan Mackay, and as such was named in Gaelic, Dùthaich 'Ic Aoidh, the Homeland of Mackay. Even today this part of Sutherland is known as Mackay Country, and, unlike other areas of Scotland where the names traditionally associated with the area have become diluted, there is still a preponderance of Mackays in the Dùthaich.

Old Travel Blog Photograph The Pencil Largs Scotland

Old travel Blog photograph of The Pencil in Largs in Ayrshire, Scotland. Largs' most famous monument is The Pencil, situated at the south end of the Prom, near to Largs Marina. The Pencil was built in 1912, to commemorate the Battle of Largs 1263, when the Scots defeated King Haco of Norway's troops on the shore at Largs, after the 160 long ships got caught in a storm. From its beginnings as a small village around its kirk, Largs evolved into a busy and popular seaside resort in the nineteenth century. Large hotels appeared and the pier was constructed in 1834. It was not until 1895, however, that the railway made the connection to Largs, sealing the town's popularity. The town is served by the railway line from Glasgow to North Ayrshire. Largs is the birthplace of the actors Daniela Nardini and John Sessions, the footballer Lou Macari and the golfer Sam Torrance. Though not born in Largs, musician and songwriter Graham Lyle of Gallagher and Lyle was brought up there and still returns to visit his holiday home.
