Old photograph of Watsness, a large headland situated on West Coast of Mainland Shetland Islands, Scotland. RAF Watness was at one time the location of a Chain Home Low (CHL) radar station built in 1942. This was the name of a British radar early warning system, detecting enemy aircraft movement at low altitudes and used with the fixed Chain Home system which was operated by the RAF during World War II.

Old Photograph Townhead Douglas South Lanarkshire Scotland


Old photograph of the hotel, shops, houses and people in Townhead, Douglas, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. This village was one of several locations near which a large camp of the Polish Army was set up in 1940. Units of the 10th Polish Cavalry, including the Podhalanski Highland Battalion, 10th Mounted Rifles Regiment, the 24th Lancers as well as brigade support and service units were stationed here for a brief period in a temporary tented camp before moving north to Fife and Angus where they were deployed to defend the east coast of Scotland against invasion.

Old Photograph Dovecote Road Corstorphine Edinburgh Scotland


Old photograph of houses on Dovecote Road in Corstorphine, Edinburgh, Scotland. John Linn was a British Royal Engineer. He was born in Corstorphine and joined the Army in 1846. Two years later he moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, where he was stationed for 9 years. He later settled in British Columbia in 1859. He died on April 18, 1876 from a paralytic stroke. North Vancouver's Lynn Valley is named after him.

Old Photograph Uig Beach Isle of Lewis Outer Hebrides Scotland


Old photograph of the beach at Uig on the western coast of the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The name derives from the Norse word Vik meaning 'a bay'. Uig Beach and sands are surrounded by the villages of Crowlista, Timdgarry, Ardroil and Carnish. It is best known as the site where the Lewis Chessmen were found. Before 1831, a local crofter discovered a buried hoard of chess pieces, uncovered following a storm.
