Old Photograph Episcopal Church Burravoe Yell Shetland Islands Scotland
Old photograph of St Colman's Episcopal Episcopal Church in Burravoe on the Isle of Yell, Shetland Islands, Scotland. This church was designed by R. Speir and was built with the finest materials. It has a rectangular nave with small external buttresses and an apsidal chancel, and there is a little spire over a ventilator at the east end of the nave. The walls are built of rubble with good sandstone dressings. Shetland lies over 200 miles north of Aberdeen and a similar distance from Norway. This isolation has created a self reliant spirit and a strong sense of identity and community. The main forms of travel to the islands are by boat via Aberdeen and aeroplane from Aberdeen, Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Tour Scotland Video Drive A885 Road To Loch Leathan Isle Of Skye Inner Hebrides
Tour Scotland video of a drive on the single track road passed Loch Fada to Loch Leathan on ancestry visit to Isle of Skye, Inner Hebrides, Scotland. The A855 is approximately 33 miles long, encircling the beautiful Trotternish Peninsula at the north end of Skye. It is single track for much of its length, undergoing fairly frequent repair as it is mostly built on top of a peat moor. A single track road or one lane road is a road that permits two way travel but is not wide enough in most places to allow vehicles to pass one another, although sometimes two compact cars can pass. This kind of road is common in rural areas across the United Kingdom and elsewhere. The term is widely used in Scotland, particularly in the Highlands and Islands. Highland Heroine Flora MacDonald famously helped Bonnie Prince Charlie, Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender, escape from the Isle of Uist to Skye. The prince had fled following defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Charles had been on the run for two months before he met Flora. The Prince was disguised as Flora's 'Irish Maid, Betty Burke, and they made the famous journey by rowing boat to Skye. Flora then aided the Prince in his escape to Portree where they parted company never to meet again. From here on Stuart was able to obtain passage to France and successfully escaped. Flora was arrested for her part in the escape, and imprisoned at Dunstaffnage Castle, Oban and briefly in the tower of London, she was released in 1747.
