Old Photograph Episcopal Church Burravoe Yell Shetland Islands Scotland

Old photograph of St Colman's Episcopal Episcopal Church in Burravoe on the Isle of Yell, Shetland Islands, Scotland. This church was designed by R. Speir and was built with the finest materials. It has a rectangular nave with small external buttresses and an apsidal chancel, and there is a little spire over a ventilator at the east end of the nave. The walls are built of rubble with good sandstone dressings. Shetland lies over 200 miles north of Aberdeen and a similar distance from Norway. This isolation has created a self reliant spirit and a strong sense of identity and community. The main forms of travel to the islands are by boat via Aberdeen and aeroplane from Aberdeen, Edinburgh or Glasgow.
