Old photograph of men playing Bowls on the Lawn Bowling Green in Laurencekirk, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. In 1864 William Wallace Mitchell, born 1803, died 1884, a Glasgow Cotton Merchant, published his " Manual of Bowls Playing " following his work as the secretary formed in 1849 by Scottish bowling clubs which became the basis of the rules of the modern game. Young Mitchell was only 11 when he played on Kilmarnock Bowling green, the oldest club in Scotland, instituted in 1740.

Old Photograph Wilsons Railway Hotel Laurencekirk Scotland
Old photograph of Wilsons Railway Hotel in Laurencekirk, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The railway station here was opened on 1 November 1849 by the Aberdeen Railway, which ran from Aberdeen in the north to Guthrie, just outside Arbroath, to the south. The line joined the North British, Arbroath and Montrose Railway north of Montrose at Kinnaber Junction and Arbroath and Forfar Railway at the triangular junctions at Friockheim and Guthrie. The station was closed in September 1967.

Old Photograph Orig Street Thurso Scotland
Old photograph of people, houses and shops on Orig Street in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland. Thurso was an important Norse port, and has a later history of trade with ports throughout northern Europe until the 19th century. A thriving fishing centre, Thurso also had a reputation for its linen cloth and tanning activities.

Old Photograph Pavilion Cinema Wick Scotland
Old photograph of people outside the Pavilion Cinema on the High Street in Wick, Caithness. Scotland. The Pavilion Cinema was opened in 1930 as a skating rink. By 1934 it had been converted into a cinema, operated by Wick Playhouse Limited, and films were booked at the Playhouse, Inverness. By 1937 it was operated by A.B. King’s Caledonian Associated Cinemas Limited. It had a 26 feet wide proscenium. It was later converted into a nightclub, and was gutted by a fire in 1996.

Old Photograph Post Office Dura Den Scotland
Old photograph of the Post Office and cottages in Dura Den a village near Cupar, Fife, Scotland. Around 1859 the geologist and Newburgh minister John Anderson discovered what turned out to be extensive sandstone deposits of ganoid fossilized fish in this area.
