Old photograph of a funeral in Coldstream, Borders, Scotland. A Scottish a town which is located on the north bank of the River Tweed in Berwickshire, while Northumberland in England lies to the south bank, with Cornhill-on-Tweed the nearest village. A former burgh, Coldstream is the home of the Coldstream Guards, a regiment in the British Army, and is the location where Edward I of England invaded Scotland in 1296. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Coldstream was a popular centre for runaway marriages, much like Gretna Green.

Views of, and from, the hill are often used in photographs and paintings of the city. The hill was used from ancient times as a place of execution. Most famously Major Weir the self-confessed Edinburgh warlock, was executed here.

Old Photograph Tourists Rest And Be Thankful Road Scotland


Old travel Blog photograph of tourists at the Rest And Be Thankful road in Argyll, Scotland. A stone commemorates the completion of this military road built by General Wade in 1750. Field Marshal George Wade, born 1673, died 14 March 1748, was a British Army officer who served in the Nine Years' War, War of the Spanish Succession, Jacobite rising of 1715 and War of the Quadruple Alliance before leading the construction of barracks, bridges and proper roads in Scotland. He went on to be a military commander during the War of the Austrian Succession and Commander in Chief of the Forces during the Jacobite rising of 1745. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
