Old Photograph Rosehaugh House Scotland

Old photograph of Rosehaugh House in Avoch on the South East coast of the Black Isle in Scotland. Sir Roderick Mackenzie of Scatwell built a house here in 1798. James Fletcher originally from Avoch bought the estate in 1864 having made a fortune in Liverpool. The existing house was much enlarged in 1872 by Alexander Ross which formed a relatively small part of the eventual house. Fletcher’s son James Douglas employed William Flockhart, a London Scot architect to carry out a complete remodelling and major extension between 1898 and 1903. The house was demolished in 1959.

Old Photograph Ardmaddy Castle Scotland

Old photograph of Ardmaddy Castle located twelve miles from Oban, Scotland. This castle was a seat of the Earl of Breadalbane in Kilbrandon parish. It stands on rising ground, at the head of a fine small bay, opposite Seil island, two miles North of Loch Melford. It belonged to the Macdougals, Lords of Lorn; passed to the Campbells of the House of Argyll; was occupied and enlarged by Lord Neil Campbell, who suffered during the persecution in the time of King Charles II, and was put to death in 1685; became the residence of Colin Campbell, the father of the late Marquis of Breadalbane, and was the birthplace of the marquis. A small cave, in the face of a rock, at a short distance from it, is pointed out as a hiding place of Lord Neil Campbell in the time of the persecution.

Old Photograph Surgeon's Hall Edinburgh Scotland

Old photograph of Surgeon's Hall in Edinburgh, Scotland. Surgeons' Hall is the headquarters of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. It houses the Surgeons' Hall Museum, and the library and archive of the RCSED. The present Surgeons' Hall was designed by William Henry Playfair and completed in 1832.

Old Photograph Hospital Peebles Scotland

Old photograph of the hospital in Peebles in the Borders of Scotland. Peebles Hydro hotel opened in 1881, but burnt down and was rebuilt in 1907. It served as a hospital for injured service personnel during the First World War before reverting to hotel use. During the Second World War it was turned into a hospital, the 23rd Scottish General Hospital T.A. with 1,200 beds.

Old Photograph Arhain Point Calgary Bay Isle of Mull Scotland

Old photograph of sheep on Arhain Point overlooking Calgary Bay, Isle of Mull, Scotland. On the East side of the bay Calgary House, now called Calgary Castle, was built in 1817 extending an earlier Calgary Estate laird's house. Colonel James Macleod, Commissioner of the North West Mounted Police, was a summer guest here. In 1876, shortly after returning to Canada, he suggested its name for Fort Calgary which gave rise to the city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
