Old Photograph Birkmyre Park Scotland

Old photograph of people walking in Birkmyre Park in Port Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland. In 1895, William Birkmyre of the mill family provided a recreation ground for the people of the town. He purchased and donated ground near Glenhuntly House on which he built this park. Known locally as The Public Park it is unusual in that it is on a very steep hillside, but the walk to the top is made worthwhile by the stunning views of the Firth of Clyde and Ben Lomond available from there. Prior to the closure of the Glen and Kingston shipyards, this was a good spot to view the ships under construction.

Old Photograph Rusko Castle Scotland

Old photograph of Rusko Castle by Gatehouse of Fleet, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotlan0. This Scottish castle dates from the early 16th century. In early times it belonged to the Carsnane family and was known as Glenskyreburn before it passed by marriage in the early 16th century to Sir Robert Gordon of Lochinvar. It was inhabited until around 1890. Sir Robert Gordon of Lochinvar was the son of Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar and Elizabeth Maxwell, ex husband of Isabel Ruthven. Father of John Gordon, 1st Viscount Kenmure; Mary Gordon; Elizabeth Maxwell and Jane Gordon. Brother of Janet Gordon of Lochinvar; Grizel Gordon, Countess of Galloway and James Gordon of Buittle.Half brother of Margaret Gordon.

Old Photograph Creetown Scotland

Old photograph of cottages and car in Creetown near the head of Wigtown Bay, 18 miles Weest of Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. This Scottish village was formerly served by the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Railway. The granite quarries in the vicinity constitute the leading industry, the stone for the Liverpool docks and other public works having been obtained from them. The village dates from 1785, and became a burgh of barony in 1792. Sir Walter Scott laid part of the scene of Guy Mannering in this neighborhood. Dr Thomas Brown, the metaphysician, born 1778, died 1820, was a native of the parish in which Creetown lies. James Thomson was born in 1788 in Creetown. The son of William Thomson and Janet Burnett, belonging to a family that professed the Presbyterian religion. After completing his secondary studies, he enrolled in medicine and theology at Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities and later took a doctorate at McGill University in Canada. He learned the Spanish language, and served as a pastor in a village in Scotland. In 1818, James Thomson arrived at the port of Buenos Aires. He had been commissioned by the British and Foreign Bible Society, to carry out the education system created by Joseph Lancaster.During his stay in Argentina, he was in charge of instructing the teachers of Buenos Aires. After the successful implementation of the Lancastrian system in the Río de la Plata, Thomson was appointed director of schools in Buenos Aires, a position he had held until 1821. In 1821, Thomson was hired by the government of Chile. And in 1822, was invited by the General José de San Martín to visit the city of Lima, in order to introduce a modern education system. He died in 1854.

Old Photograph Symington Street Leadhills Scotland

Old photograph of cottages on Symington Street in Leadhills, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Lead and silver have been mined here and at nearby Wanlockhead, for many centuries, according to some authorities even in Roman days. Gold was discovered in the reign of King James IV, but though it is said then to have provided employment for 300 persons, its mining has long ceased to be profitable. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
