Old Photographs High Street Johnstone Scotland

Old photograph of shops, Tram, buildings and people on the High Street in Johnstone located three miles West of Paisley, Scotland. This Scottish town was a planned community created in the latter half of the 18th century by the local Laird, George Ludovic Houston who held an estate in the town, the remains of which are known as Johnstone Castle. Industrial development brought coal mining, thread-making and cotton weaving to Johnstone causing it to grow considerably in size, expanding out in the 1930s with a number of newly built residential areas which addressed the problem of population density in the historic area of the town. Today it supports a small commercial centre and serves as a commuter settlement for Paisley and Glasgow.

Old Photograph Eglinton Toll Glasgow Scotland

Old photograph of Trams, shops, houses and people at Eglinton Toll in Glasgow, Scotland. St Andrew's Cross also known as Eglinton Toll is a road junction in the Southside of the city of Glasgow. Tolls were introduced in 1750 to assist with the upkeep of the roads, and were paid at Toll Bars to a keeper who lived in a nearby house.

Old Photograph Knockhall Castle Scotland

Old photograph of Knockhall Castle located near to Newburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This Scottish castle was built by Lord Sinclair of Newburgh in 1565. It was purchased by Clan Udny, who moved into the castle in 1634. The building was damaged in 1639 when taken by the Earl Marischal for the Covenanters, but was later returned to Udny hands. The Clan remained in the castle until 1734, when an accidental fire gutted the building and the Clan moved back to their other property, Udny Castle. Jamie Fleeman, the Laird of Udny's fool, is credited with saving the life of the family in the fire.
