Old Photograph Ferrymen Ardrossan Scotland

Old photograph of Ferrymen in Ardrossan located in North Ayrshire, Scotland. Passenger ferry services from Ardrossan harbour to Brodick on the Isle of Arran started in 1834, and services to Belfast in Ireland, later Northern Ireland, and the Isle of Man followed in 1884 and 1892 respectively. Clyde sailings were operated initially by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company from Winton Pier and the Caledonian Railway from Montgomerie Pier.

Old Photograph Pond Elder Park Govan Scotland

Old photograph of people by the pond in Elder Park in Govan, Glasgow, Scotland. Elder Park was established in 1885 by Mrs Isabella Elder as monument to her shipbuilder husband. Isabella Ure, born 1828, died 1905, was an important philanthropist whose used her wealth and status for the benefit of the wider community, especially championing women's education. A solicitor's daughter, she married John Elder, partner in the marine engineering company of Randolph, Elder and Company in 1857. The firm prospered becoming John Elder and Company in 1868, and taking over the Fairfield shipbuilding yard in Govan. It soon became a world leading company. After John Elder's death in 1869 Isabella Elder supported many charitable causes, notably in Govan and in support of the education of women.

Old Photograph Rothesay Dock Scotland

Old photograph of Rothesay Dock in Clydebank by Glasgow, Scotland. Built by the Clyde Navigation Trust at the East Barns of Clyde, the dock was designed to facilitate the growing trade of coal exports and iron ore imports for Lanarkshire steelworks.

Old Photograph Cyclists Oldmeldrum Scotland

Old photograph of cyclists in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Donald Gordon, who was born in Oldmeldrum on December 11, 1901. He was a Canadian businessman and the former President of the Canadian National Railways from 1950 to 1966. He went to Canada at an early age. At 15, he joined the Bank of Nova Scotia in Toronto, becoming assistant chief accountant and assistant manager of the Toronto branch. In 1935, he was appointed Secretary of the newly formed Bank of Canada and later became deputy governor. At the outbreak of war, Gordon was appointed Chairman of the Foreign Exchange Control Board, and then from 1941 to 1947, he was Chairman of the Wartime Prices and Trade Board. In 1944, he was made a Companion of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George. And, in 1968, he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. Died on May 2, 1969.

William Keith, who was born in Oldmeldrum on November 18, 1838. He was a Scottish American painter famous for his California landscapes. He is associated with Tonalism and the American Barbizon school. Although most of his career was spent in California, he started out in New York, made two extended study trips to Europe, and had a studio in Boston in 1871 and one in New York in 1880. Keith was part of a group of friends of John Muir who met in San Francisco starting in 1889 to support the establishment of Yosemite National Park. This group went on to encourage Muir to establish an association to protect the Sierra Nevada. In 1892, this plan was realized when the Sierra Club was founded. Keith died in his home at 2207 Atherton Street in Berkeley, California in 1911. He is buried in plot 14b at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland.
