Old photograph of the Old Golf Course in North Berwick, Scotland. West Links is an Open qualifying course, the golf club was founded in 1832. It has an antiquated charm with walls, burns, yawning bunkers and commanding views out to sea and of the Forth estuary.

Old Photographs Lochranza Scotland

Old photograph of Lochranza, Island of Arran, Scotland. Lochranza is the most northernly sited of Arran's villages and is located in the northwestern corner of the island. The village is set on the shore of Loch Ranza, a small sea loch. Formerly a herring fishing port, the village economy is now geared more towards tourism after the reopening of the pier in 2003. Lochranza is also the site of the Arran Distillery, built in 1995 and producing the Arran Single Malt. It is said that a local midwife once had an encounter with the Queen of the Fairies at Lochranza.

Old Photograph Two Peat Carts Orkney Scotland

Old photograph of two Peat Carts on, Orkney Islands, Scotland. Crofters bringing home the peat. Years ago, peat, a product of decayed vegetation found in boggy moorland, was the only fuel for many people in the Highlands and Islands. The fires in crofters cottages were kept constantly alight, smouldering with two or three peats placed within the kitchen range and never allowed to go out. At night a really dry lighter peat was preferred, and just a few big peats were placed flat on top of the fire to burn slowly and safely. Then from the remaining embers, the following morning’s fire was rekindled.
