Old photograph of Bernard Street, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. After the abdication of Mary Queen of Scots in 1567, during the ensuing civil war, troops fighting for James VI of Scotland against his mother's supporters in Edinburgh Castle based themselves in Leith from 1571 to 1573, a period called the " Wars between Leith and Edinburgh ". A century later, Leith was a prospective battleground when the Army of the Covenant, led by General David Leslie, threw up an earthen rampart between Calton Hill and Leith to defend the northern approach to Edinburgh against Oliver Cromwell's forces.

Old photograph of Fishwives in Eyemouth, Scotland. A thriving herring port in the nineteenth century, Eyemouth had 61 registered fishing boats and over 40 foreign boats in 1891 and Eyemouth Kippers were once as famous as Arbroath Smokies.

Old photograph of cottages and people in Barr, South Ayrshire, Scotland. The parish has a strong Covenanters history with several being laid to rest in the village cemetery.

Old Photograph Maybole Scotland


Old photograph of Maybole, South Ayrshire, Scotland. In former times, Maybole was the capital of the district of Carrick, and for long its characteristic feature was the family mansions of the barons of Carrick. Maybole Castle, a former seat of the Earls of Cassillis, dates to 1560 and still remains. Maybole is a short distance from the birthplace of Robert Burns, the Scots national poet. Burns married a Maybole resident, Agnes Brown.
