May 25th photograph of Dowhill House near Kinross, Scotland. A private residence that my tour groups may visit on their small group tours of Scotland. The centre part of the house was built in 1710, 300 years ago this year, by Mr Budd. Mr Budd became the factor to the Adam family of Blairadam two miles away. William Adam developed a large estate with Mr Budd's help and finally his son's widow left the house to the Adam's in 1823.

Perth and Kinross, at the geographical heart of Scotland, contain buildings which range from the remains of a Roman line of forts and watch towers, the fort at Ardoch, of the first and second centuries, is one of the best preserved and least known of such structures in Britain, early historic hill forts, a remarkable array of carved stones erected by the warrior aristocracy of the sixth to ninth centuries, the inventive medieval Dunkeld Cathedral, and mottes, castles and tower houses, among them the island fortress of Lochleven Castle and Elcho Castle's assertion of baronial status. The grandiose funerary monuments of the seventeenth century at Scone Palace and the Kinoull Aisle presaged the 'court' classicism of Sir William Bruce, which is exemplified by his own mansion, garden and landscape at Kinross House. Blair Castle's mid-eighteenth century stucco work, unequalled in Scotland, celebrates the magnificence of the Dukes of Atholl, this display challenged in the early nineteenth century by the sumptuous Gothic palaces of Scone and Taymouth Castle. A multitude of smaller country houses embrace a variety of styles (classical, Italianate, castellated and Baronial), while Georgian and Victorian churches, many with superb stained glass, abound. Among towns and villages, Dunkeld is the epitome of a small Scottish burgh while the Royal burgh of Perth has expanded from its medieval core with the addition of late Georgian 'new towns' and civic and industrial monuments of the nineteenth century. Building Scotland. Scotland's traditionally built environment is one of its most unique and cherished features. It is something which both draws visitors from around the world and gives Scotland's inhabitants a sense of place and identity. This volume celebrates for the first time the raw materials which have been employed in forming Scotland's traditional buildings. In total 14 different materials are examined, including stone, timber, iron, clay and slate, with each being discussed by an expert in the material, reflecting regional variations, the socio-economic stories behind the materials, and how they have shaped Scotland's traditionally built environment. Each chapter covers aspects of the material such as how it has been utilised over time, geographical variations throughout the country, the properties of the material and examples of its use. Tour Scotland photograph of Kinross House, Kinross, Scotland. Kinross House is a late 17th century country house overlooking Loch Leven, near Kinross in Scotland. Construction of the house was begun in 1686, by the architect Sir William Bruce as his own home. It is regarded as one of his finest works, and was called by Daniel Defoe "the most beautiful and regular piece of Architecture in Scotland". The house, which is undoubtedly the most important early classical mansion in Scotland, retains most of its original internal decoration. The house is not open to the public, although the elegant gardens can be visited. The structure is also notable in its precocious use of a medieval building as focus, as the house itself, and its garden avenue, are deliberately orientated on the picturesque object of 14th century Loch Leven Castle on an island in the adjacent loch.

Tour Scotland Photograph Stubborn Belgian Blue Kinross
Tour Scotland photograph of a stubborn Belgian Blue at the Agricultural Show in Kinross, Perthshire, Scotland. Belgian Blue cattle are a beef breed from Belgium, known in French as Race de la Moyenne et Haute Belgique. Alternative names include Belgian Blue-White, Belgian White and Blue Pied, Belgian White Blue, Blue and Blue Belgian. The sculpted, heavily muscled appearance is known as "double muscling", and is a trait shared by the Piedmontese breed. They are named for their typically blue grey mottled hair colour, although it can vary from white to black.

Tour Scotland Photograph Welsh Ponies Kinross
Tour Scotland photograph of Welsh ponies at the Agricultural Show in Kinross, Perthshire, Scotland. Native ponies existed in Wales before 1600 BC, and a Welsh type cob was known as early as the Middle Ages. They were influenced by the Arabian horse, and possibly also by the Thoroughbred and the Hackney horse.
