Walking on Harris and Lewis. With high hills that sweep down to white sandy beaches caressed and, at times, buffeted by the Atlantic, Harris and Lewis offer one of the last remaining refuges for walkers looking for spectacular scenery, ancient monuments - and a break from the madding crowd. Maps of the area show few footpaths, but this new guide describes 30 memorable walks ranging from all-day routes in the high hills to shorter, lower-level walks that visit the world-famous heritage sites and antiquities including a high-level horseshoe around An Cliseam and its neighbours, half-day circular walks around the famous stone circles of Calanais and the Butt of Lewis lighthouse and detailed routes into areas of wilderness visited only by the Golden Eagle and the mountain hare. With dramatic photographs, detailed OS mapping and frequent notes on places and points of interest, this is a book to inspire you and to take with you when you go. For many armchair travelers the Outer Hebrides of Scotland epitomize the beauty and remoteness of island life. And the most dramatic of all the Hebrides is Harris, where the legendary Harris Tweed is woven by local crofters, reflecting the strength, durability, and integrity of life on Harris. Harris has dramatic mountains and huge, pristine sandy beaches bordering the open Atlantic. Yeadon captures in words and through his evocative line drawings the life of the island people, their folkways and humour and the simple life of crofting and fishing which have hardly changed in hundreds of years. Although sometimes threatened by the inroads of commerce and tourism, Harris remains in many ways idyllic, the most resonant and romantic of all the Hebridean islands. Yeadon also makes side trips to Barra, the southernmost of the Hebrides, to the Shiant Islands with author Adam Nicolson and to the fabled St. Kilda, the most remote of all the Scottish islands, 50 miles out in the Atlantic, wreathed in legend and history. Seasons on Harris: A Year in Scotland's Outer Hebrides.

Tour Scotland Ailein Duinn Video

Tour Scotland Ailein Duinn video. Ailein duinn or Dark-haired Alan, is a traditional Scottish song for solo female voice, a lament that was written in Gàidhlig for Ailean Moireasdan, Alan Morrison, by his fiancée, Annag Chaimbeul, Annie Campbell. In 1788, Ailean, a sailor, set off with his ship to Scalpay, Harris, where he and Annag would be married. In a tragic twist, the ship sailed into a storm and all on board were lost. Annag was devastated and lost her will to live, dying several months later. Her body was later discovered on the beach, not far from where Ailean's body was found. Before she died, Annag composed this lament for her lost love. Song is sung on this video by Capercaillie.

How sorrowful I am
Early in the morning rising.

Chorus (after each verse):
Ò hì, I would go with thee
Hì ri bhò hò ru bhì
Hì ri bhò hò rinn o ho
Brown-haired Alan, ò hì, I would go with thee.

If it is thy pillow the sand
If it is thy bed the seaweed.

If it is the fish thy candles bright
If it is the seals thy watchmen.

I would drink, though all would abhor it
Of thy heart's blood after thy drowning.

Old Photograph Hebridean Peat Carrier Scotland

Old photograph of Hebridean Peat Carrier on the Island Of Harris, Scotland. Some Scotch whisky distilleries, such as those on Islay, use peat fires to dry malted barley. The drying process takes about 30 hours. This gives the whiskies a distinctive smoky flavour, often called " peatiness ". The peatiness, or degree of peat flavour, of a whisky, is calculated in ppm of phenol. Normal Highland whiskies have a peat level of up to 30 ppm, and the whiskies on Islay usually have up to 50 ppm. In rare types like the Octomore, the whisky can have more than 100 ppm of phenol. Scotch Ales can also use peat roasted malt, imparting a similar smoked flavor.
