Old Photograph Crofters Cottage Glencoe Scotland

Old photograph of a Crofters cottage in Glencoe, Scotland. Glencoe was the location of the infamous massacre of the Macdonalds by the Campbells. It has been associated with the mighty Clan Donald since the 14th century, when Angus Og McDonald of Islay bestowed the Glencoe lands on his son Iain Abrach, the ancestor of the Glencoe McDonalds. The McDonalds of Glencoe held their lands under the feudal superiority of Stewart of Appin, and later the Campbells of Argyll.

Tour Scotland photograph of the River Coupall Falls and Buachaile Etive Mor, Glencoe, Scotland. Glencoe is the spiritual home of many a mountaineer and hill walker. Although the English author, Charles Dickens called it " perfectly terrible, an awful place, scores of glens high up, which form such haunts as you might imagine yourself wandering in, the very height and madness of a fever ", it provides some of the finest climbing and walking terrain in Scotland.

This was the treacherous and cold-blooded order ruthlessly carried out on 13 February 1692, when the Campbells slaughtered their hosts the MacDonalds at the Massacre of Glencoe. Old photograph of Buachaille Etive Mor mountain, and Kings House Hotel, Glencoe, Scotland. Built in the 17th century, Kings House is believed to be one of Scotland's oldest licensed inns. The building was used after the Battle of Culloden in 1745, as a barracks for troops of George III, hence the name Kings House. It was the task to keep the Highlanders under subjection and to capture their elusive champion Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Tour Scotland Photograph River Etive


Tour Scotland photograph of the River Etive flowing through Glen Etive, Scotland. The River Etive rises on the peaks surrounding Rannoch Moor, with several tributary streams coming together at the Kings House Hotel, at the head of Glencoe. From the Kings House, the Etive flows for about 18 km, reaching the sea loch, Loch Etive.

Tour Scotland Photograph Video River Coe


Tour Scotland photograph of the River Coe in Glencoe, Scotland. The River Coe, Scottish Gaelic: Comhan, rises at the north eastern base of Buachaille Etive Beag and flows west along Glen Coe. After dramatic waterfalls at the Pass of Glen Coe, It runs through the small Loch Achtriochtan before it turns north west. It then runs past the site of the Massacre of Glencoe and passes through Glencoe village, shortly before flowing into the sea loch of Loch Leven, a salt water arm of Loch Linnhe) at Invercoe.

Tour Scotland photograph, taken in winter, of the South side of Glencoe, Scotland. Bidean nam Bian, lying to the south of Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands, is the highest point in the former county of Argyll. It is a complex mountain, with many ridges and subsidiary peaks, one of which, Stob Coire Sgreamhach, is classified as a separate Munro.

Glen Coe is a very popular tourist destination: partly because of its scenic qualities and historical associations, partly because it is on the main road north, the A82, and also because of its attraction for walkers and climbers. Many walkers come to Glen Coe on the West Highland Way following the old military road over Rannoch Moor.
