The High Girders: Tay Bridge Disaster, 1879. On 28 December, 1879, the 13 raised spans at the centre of the Tay Bridge, the "high girders", fell, taking with them 160 yards of the bridge, and a railway train with 75 men, women and children on board. This tragically ended the dream of Thomas Bouch, recently knighted for his work on the bridge, and to some extent the unparalleled reputation of British engineering in works of this kind. This book tells the story of the construction of the Tay Bridge from its planning, through its brief moment of triumph followed by disaster and the grim aftermath. It recreates every character and ingredient of this man-made catastrophe, and evokes the drama of the fatal night. The High Girders: Tay Bridge Disaster, 1879.

Old Photograph Reform Street Dundee Scotland

Old photograph of Reform Street, Dundee, Scotland. The street was named after the Reform Act of 1832. The Act was a response to many years of people criticising the electoral system as unfair. For example, there were constituencies with only a handful of voters that elected two Members of Parliament to Parliament. In these constituencies, with few voters and no secret ballot, it was easy for candidates to buy votes. Yet towns like Manchester that had grown during the previous 80 years had no Members of Parliament to represent them. In 1831, the House of Commons passed a Reform Bill, but the House of Lords, dominated by Tories, defeated it. There followed riots and serious disturbances in London, Birmingham, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Yeovil, Sherborne, Exeter and Bristol, England. In Britain, King William IV lost popularity for standing in the way of reform. Eventually he agreed to create new Whig peers, and when the House of Lords heard this, they agreed to pass the Reform Act. Rotten constituencies were removed and the new towns given the right to elect Members of Parliament, although constituencies were still of uneven size. However, only men who owned property worth at least £10 could vote, which cut out most of the working classes, and only men who could afford to pay to stand for election could be MPs. This reform did not go far enough to silence all protest.

Undiscovered Dundee. History in Dundee is not a visible thing as it is in other cities such as Edinburgh or York. There are not many places in Dundee today where it is possible to stand and take in a view that would be instantly recognisable to a visitor from another century decades of wanton destruction in the name of progress have seen to that. Undiscovered Dundee is an anthology of this lost civic inheritance. It is the story of forgotten disasters and buried heritage, of harmless eccentrics and brutal murderers, of heroes and villains, of strange events and everyday landmarks. It tells of the Dundonians who time has erased, those who stayed and made a difference to their city and those who left and made an impact on a larger stage. Sometimes the story ventures far from Dundee and sometimes it tells of what happened when the world, in the form of everyone from writers to royalty, from presidents to pop stars, came to the Scottish city. Yet it is always Dundee itself that binds the story together a city that, despite appearances, is alive with history. Undiscovered Dundee.
