Tour Scotland Photograph May Robertson Gravestone Kinnoull Perth Perthshire

Tour Scotland photograph of the May Robertson Gravestone in Kinnoull Graveyard in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Erected by Alex Mackie, Bridgend, Perth, in memory of his wife May Robertson, who died in the month of June 1802. She was a loving wife, a tender parent, and a faithful friend.

Many of my tour guests are researching their Scottish Roots. The graveyard located by the River tay is well worth a visit, consisting as it does of many 17th and 18th century gravestones, including that of the ferrymen who worked the River Tay crossing between 1621 and 1772. The graveyard is also the resting place of "Euphemia (Effie) Chalmers Gray (1828 to 1897) the wife of the critic John Ruskin who later left her husband to marry his protege, the Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais.

Old Photograph Delivery Cart Scotland

Old photograph of a Delivery Cart in West Lothian, Scotland. In pre industrial times West Lothian was almost entirely agricultural. In the way of heavy industry there was a silver mine at Cairnpapple, a cotton mill at Blackburn, paper mills at Linlithgow, and shallow coal mines around Bathgate and Whitburn. The county was radically changed by the Industrial Revolution, with the opening of deep pit iron, coal, and shale oil mines, as well as foundries and brickworks. Many of the houses built for the expanding population were shoddy, necessitating the building of thousands of new houses in the latter part of the 20th century.

In A Scottish Graveyard Miscellany, Hamish Brown explores in words and extraordinary pictures the folk art of Scottish graveyards from the eighteenth century (when gravestones began to be widely used) to the present day. Each old kirkyard is a riotous celebration of folk art: there are skulls and skeletons, ships and lighthouses, angels galore, carved portraits of our forebears and even a gravestone decorated with a picture of Bart Simpson and his skateboard! More than mere memorials, the graves are a collection of pages in stone taken from the history of Scottish everyday life. Scotland's kirkyards are not gloomy places to be shunned, but places to find vivid stories from the lives of people, without distinction of class or creed. There is much humour in this book, and the photographs throughout taken by the author illustrate better than words why we should look after the unique treasuries in our midst. The Scottish Graveyard Miscellany: The Folk Art of Scotland's Graves.

Old Photographs West Kilbride Scotland

Old photograph of West Kilbride, North Ayrshire, Scotland. A Scottish village in North Ayrshire, on the west coast of Scotland by the Firth of Clyde, looking across the water to Goat Fell and the Isle of Arran. West Kilbride is generally believed to be named after the ancient Celtic Saint Brigid of Kildare, often known as St Bride. There has been a hamlet in the area since 82 AD when the Roman general Agricola stationed 30,000 troops in the area of the village now known as Gateside. Roman roads can still be explored around the village to this day. Several buildings in the area date back to medieval times. Law Castle, situated at the foot of Law Hill, was built in the 15th century for King James III's sister Mary. Portencross Castle, thought to date from the 14th century, is situated right next to the sea at Portencross harbour, The town became known as a weaving and agricultural town, one of many Ayrshire towns specialising in potatoes. Since the town became linked by rail to Glasgow in 1878, it began to attract more visitors. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

Tour Scotland Autumn Photographs Crosses Parish Churchyard Kinclaven Perthshire

Tour Scotland Autumn photograph of Celtic Crosses in the Parish Churchyard in Kinclaven, Perthshire, Scotland. Celtic cross is a term, invented in the 19th century, is a form of Christian cross with a ring surrounding the intersection of the vertical and horizontal members; the cross' stem being longer than the other three's intersection. It belongs to a wider group of crosses with a nimbus. The Celtic Christians combined the usual four members of the Christian cross with the nimbus to create high crosses, a free-standing cross made of stone which was often richly decorated. The Celtic Revival shape, usually decorated with interlace and other motifs from Insular art, became popular for funerary monuments and other uses, and has remained so, spreading well beyond Ireland.
