Tour Scotland short 4K early Autumn travel video clip of a Scotsman wearing a kilt and sporran and walking by Whithorn Priory on ancestry, genealogy, history visit and trip to Dumfries And Galloway, Britain, United Kingdom. Widely recognized as the cradle of Scottish Christianity it was first established around the 4th or 5th century by Saint Ninian, this highly sacred site evolved into a grand medieval monastery, a bustling cathedral, and a premier destination for pilgrims from across Britain and Europe for well over a millennium. St Ninian built a famous whitewashed stone church here known as Candida Casa, the White House, around AD 397. It quickly grew into a massive pilgrimage hub where kings, traders, and ordinary travellers sought out Ninian's miraculous shrine. In the mid-1100s, Fergus, the Lord of Galloway, founded a grand priory for Premonstratensian monks, which eventually doubled as the cathedral church of the region. It was a lavish complex that regularly welcomed royal pilgrims, including King James IV. The luxury ended abruptly with the Protestant Reformation of 1560. The monastery was suppressed, and over the centuries the colossal church fell into decay. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day. Find things to see and do in Scotland where you are always welcome.
