Coxton Tower located three miles South East of Elgin was originally a late 16th century stone tower house built by the Innes family. In 1584 after a family dispute, the newly built square tower of Coxton was torched by the Laird of Innes. Alexander Innes rebuild the tower in the early 17th century. The Inneses of Coxton were staunch Jacobites. They actively fought alongside Bonnie Dundee and participated in the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745. Clan Innes is a historic Scottish clan originating from the Moray district in the northeast of Scotland. Because they currently lack a chief officially recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, they are legally classified as an armigerous clan.
