The surrounding lands were granted to the Anglo Norman Charteris family in the 12th century. Sir Thomas Charteris served as Lord High Chancellor of Scotland in 1280. The present tower was built around 1600. The family was deeply involved in local border feuds, including a notorious 1526 feud with the Kilpatricks of Kirkmichael. Later, during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the family supported the Royalist cause. The estate briefly passed to the Dalziel (Dalzell) family in the 17th century before being repurchased by the Charteris family, who held it into the 20th century.
