The tower was part of the broader Kirktonhill Estate owned by the Taylor family, Clan Tailyour, who acquired their wealth from sugar plantations in Jamaica during the 18th century. Clan Tailyour is the traditional Scottish spelling variant of the widespread occupational surname Taylor, with historical roots tracing back to the Norman-French word tailler meaning to cut.
