It was built in 1452 under a licence from King James II by Baron Gray of Fowlis as a substantial L-shaped great tower house. In 1614 its was acquired by the Earl of Strathmore, who temporarily changed its name to Castle Lyon. In 1776 it was sold to George Paterson of the East India Company, who modernsed the estate, added its iconic castellated wings, and restored the original name to honor his wife. The state purchased the property after the death of Colonel Adrian Gordon Paterson. It subsequently became an adult open prison.
